Yah, I'm quite sure that is Kharchakund. Haathi Parvat is very lively visible on the route from Vuinder to Kakvushandi Taal or on the route towards Roopkund.

hi mrinmoy da.thanks for your constant help. i wil certainly call u up 2 get some imp advice.we r carrying tents from cal. what i am not sure is how do we manage the ration, food and fuel and stove. we need 2 porters 2 carry only these things.also is it our liability for the food of the porters or will they arrange it for themselves.and what about their tents.do we need 2 carry their tents also?i have also heard that permits are required for gaumukh-tapovan-nandanvan & only 150 persons per day including porters are allowed. is it true?

The swaterfall is at Harsil (about 22kms before Gangotri). The place is lovely & quite well be enjoyed other than the famous waterfall.

. Hi all,
I am new in your thread. If one really wants to enjoy the beauty of Himalaya he should stay at Harsil. Gangotri is a hill station now during season. Lots of noise music etc. When we first went there in 1995, at 8 pm night, it was desert. We could not even find a porter. Standing in the bus stand for 15 minutes in the dark, with the help of a tourist we found a place called Dhandi Baba Ashram. Again when we went there in 2003 it was totally a hill station.

I am planning to visit Gaumukh in the 1st week of June. I have ready with great interest the details and thank to all who contributed with tips and suggestions. I however have one question on the permit from Uttrachal or Gangotri to trek to Gaumukh. Is that normally easily manageable? I did not see any information on that. Any tips or suggestions there? I plan to reach gangotri on 4th evening travelling from Delhi in Car. I would ideally like to do this trek - gangotri to Gaumukh - in one day (5th June) and return on 6th back to Delhi. I would appreciate any further information on 'the permit'as I am concerned now that I may not end up wasting anytime at Gangotri or Uttrakashi for this purpose. PLease advise and you can also reach me directly via email. Thanks Vijay Bhagirath

2 weeks back I was in Tapovan and Nandanvan. The entry fee is Rs. 25 per head per day. Tent fee Rs. 40 per day. Still Camera charge Rs. 100/-. They will deposit some hundreds of Money for plastic bottles. If you bring back your bottles, money will be returned. But don't forget to take reciet. Initially for 2 days entry fee will be taken and rest to be taken on returning. THey may say reciet is not given for the rest amount, but you bang on reciet and they will give with unhappy face.
It is better to take guide or porter from Utterkashi, its far cheaper.
Porter Union will ask for union fee at Gangotri, but it is Rs. 50 per porter or guide. But they may ask for 100. Bergain.
It is better not to go in November. Now Tapovan route has changed a lot and my guide was telling it was not that bad ever. Last 2 km is really steep.

The route of final ascent after crossing the Gangotri glacier changes even within hours due to rock fall. The last 2km is not only steep but loose rocks makes it more tiresome. Anyway the view of the Bhagirathi peaks & other peaks along with the massive Shivling (although can't be seen once u cross the glacier) makes u charged enough during the halts.

My tip (as a newbee to trekking) is to take enough rest in between rather than pushing beyond limits. The view of the Shivling once u reach Tapabon is something atleast I'm never going to forget.

Is mid august a good time to go to Gaumukh-Tapovan-Nadanvan.

If not, I was wondering what would be the best trek in mid August if one has 11 days Haridvar to Haridvar. We had planned for VOF,hemkund etc. but then would want to go to someplace that is not a crowded place. We even thoght of adding kakbhusundi tal trek to vof, but hardly info could be obtained..

Inputs would be highly appreciated.

I would not advise to go there in mid august. Once it starts to rain in June, things can get difficult. Best time to go would be in the first or second week of may

Need help with Sandakphu

I am planning to go to India this summer. I would have liked to go in second week of May, but now it seems I have to wait till June. Do you think Sandakphu is doable in June? I might be able to squeeze out 8 days for this trip.

The monsoon will have come and it will rain a lot. If you can walk in the rain then you may go. Not too sure about the mountain views though.

How about Gangotri - Gaumukh trek in mid March?

How is the idea of going for a gangotri trek in mid march? I know its a bit early for the destination but any one who thinks its feasible?

Also, I would like to ask people who are interested for the same?
