Question Ramni to Kuari pass trek

Hello
i am planning to trek from Ramni to Kauri in august (early august).

i have the following questions:

1. can this be done without taking a tent ?
( is this a tea-house trek ?)

2. typically, does this region receive rains in august ?

3. where can i find a basic description of the route ?

thanks

Hi,
1. You require the camping equipment. No tea house trek.
2. It should be raining during early Aug.
3. The route is given on some other thread on the same subject.
You shall have to take guide for the trek. Alone is not advisable.

I have done this trek in Sept'95 with a guide and camping equipments. However, we stayed in Jana Milan Kendra at Ramani and with a family in Jhenji. But at Podan and Dakwani, you certainly require tents.
As I have said in my post under the thread 'Combo trek to Roop kund and Kuari Pass', if you are not able to see the himalayan peaks from Kuari pass due to rain clouds and mists, the main purpose of the trek is defeated.

thanks vsk , sadanand , trishul.

the places mentioned in the route, i.e jhenjipatni
dhakwani, sinyartoli; are they vilages or just
camping grounds ?

also, which is the place closest to ramni from
where a local guide could be picked up ?

please suggest some tea-house routes ( those
that do not require a tent ) in uttaranchal for trekking
in August.

with regards

Ramni and Jhenjipatni are hamlets. One can stay here in one of the local houses. Beyond Jhenji, there are good camping grounds e.g. Dakwani.

The trek starts from Ghat which is a big village and you can get guide , porters and provisions.

You can do Har-ki-Dun trek in Aug. without requiring tents. On this trekking route, there are villages with GMVN TRH at Sankri, Taluka, and Seema (opp. Oslo village). In Har-ki-Dun valley, there is a FRH. When I did this trek in Aug'94, GMVN's TRH was under construction. I think it may be functional now. Please check. If you wish to trek Ruinsara Tal from Har-ki-Dun( or from Seema), you will have to carry tent to stay overnight at Ruinsara.

Hi,
You may try Pindari, Kafni glacier trek or Panchchuli BC (East side). You do not require to carry any equipment except your sleeping bag. Pic you can see at himalayancamping.com. About the weather nothing much can be said. If Aug is the only time available go for panchchuli BC (East).

Arrange guide cum porters at Joshimath or Ghat. Also pick up rations & provisons here. Bring canned/vacuum packed food with you. Mid September is the best time.

I second jyotirmoy's suggestions. You won't get food beyond Jhenji until Auli or Tapovan depending upon where you wish to end the trek.

Hi alwaysvj,
For Kauri Pass, you will find potters at Ghat. You need to do entire purchasing for Food before starting the trekk. Apart from a Guest-house at JhinjiPaani (Rs. 150/day), you need to stay at tent all days.
But I will suggest you to take Har Ki Dun, inplace of Kauri pass, as HKD is more scenic, and people are more friendly as compared to the Kauri-pass.

thanks for the inputs,

looks like a trek that needs full-fledged preparation...
anyways, i want to stick to this route. i had decided
on this on the last day of my previous himalayan trek...

i have heard it is a beautiful route through the
woods to the peaks. Bill Aitken rates this as
the best trail in his book ``footloose in the himalaya''.

is there a place on the web or even some book for that
matter where a detailed description of this route is given ?
(like the description of the pindari trail on indiamike for
example)

Now jeep goes upto RAMNI/RAVNI.
This is not TEA HOUSE TREK-you need ponies and all equipment for this trek.
Jungle is dense near PANA and DOMABITA area-this is also one of the most calm places in himalayas these days- you can even reach CHAMOLI from here.

Guidance is must as after PASS- trail for AULI is through jungle again and one can esily lost here. [ 10 years back- I spend 4 days in this jungle when I lost my way being too sure that I am on right trail ]
