This wud not be the first time there has been a 'clash' of conflicting instructions between ITBP and District HQ. In 2004 during the off-season they turned me back at Kopang, 13 km short of Gangotri. Next day I met the SDM at Uttarkashi, application for permit in hand, and he told me categorically "There is no ban from our side for visitors going to Gangotri." Nevertheless he approved my application and wrote an additional note on the same paper to ITBP telling them not to stop people without permits. Back at Kopang, the ITBP told me that the DM and SP had both come visiting previously and gave clear instructions (verbal of course ) to stop anyone getting past without a permit. Go figure.
The concern in that area is a lack of police in the off-season, which people try to take advantage of by building illegally at Gangotri.

Good to hear that you are from MORANG and I am sure you might be knowing SURJIT NEGI and YOGESH BORAS from THANGI.

I was reading discussion on KK Circuit and feeling happy that now this region has caught eyes of trekkers and very soon we may have more and more people coming to this area. Imagine, life here 10 years back...then no one asks for permits and permissions and ITBP checkpost used to be next to BUS STAND at THANGI.

We used to get down-show out PHOTO ID's and were served even cup of tea !!
)

Life changes....very fast..now no advantage of being Indian...and paper work is required to go ahead.

It is good to see that jeeps are going upto LAMBAR- I think couple of more years for CHARANG !!

Regarding permits for parikrama

Hi

My friend and I did the parikrama in end July.

Anyway, for foreigners - I don't know if this applies to Indian citizens - you need a permit to visit Charang village, which is checked at the checkpoint at Shruting/Shruling meadow by the ITBP. To complete the parikrama by the normal Lalanti-Chitkul route no permit is needed, or was in the end of July at least. We were told in Rekong Peo that it was decided some years back that there was no need for permits for the parikrama.

Best wishes
Lars
