I admit the thought had occurred but I'm really keen to experience the toy train to Shimla having heard so much about it. I wonder how easy it would be to go into Uttarakhand from Shimla. And where?

Actually the Mcleodganj - Triund - Glacier trek is very do-able in 2 - 3 days. And once can get back to a small place called Gallu which is a one hour walk from Mcleodganj. (There is also a road to Gallu from M). Gallu has 2 or 3 guesthouses and the view is fantastic. There are different walks in every direction. One is a couple of hours walk from Triund, one hour walk from Mcleodganj, a short walk from a waterfall. Its a great place to relax. The place is run by someone called Daya Sagar who also runs a group that organises treks from Mcleodganj.
I liked using Mcleodganj as a base because its just an hours journey by road from the railway station Patankhot. Also, while most of what you said about M is true, I liked the bakeries and coffee shops and yummy momos available at the street corners. I can find myself in places like that! SBZ |

Thanks for the suggestions guys. To be honest though, from looking at other threads it doesn't sound like there will really be snow caps around end september/early october. This being the case I'm wondering about (again, seen in other threads and in LP) staying nearer to Shimla and maybe looking at the Pabbar Valley. I saw some pics posted by KS_bluechip which looked really good. Does anyone knoe where Janglikh is?
