Please help: McLeod Ganj to Manimahesh Lake

Hi Guys,

I'm really hoping someone can help me. I'm going to be in McLeod Ganj at the end of September with no more than 5 days and I'd REALLY REALLY like to get to Manimahesh Lake. I'm not sure about time constraints, routes, weather etc so I just have a couple of questions that I REALLY hope you guys can help me with.

- Is it possible to get there from McL without going all the way round through Chamba?

- How long would I need: how much is driveable in a jeep/taxi and how much trekking would be involved?

- What would the weather be like at the end of September?

As I said, I REALLY hope you can help me. Any advice and I'll be eternally grateful.

Thanks.

I don't think it is possible to do it from Mcleodganj... Chamba has to be the starting point, as the 2 places are quite far off...

Well, if there is no specific reason for going to Mcleodganj other than a vacation, then why not head the Chamba way... I am sure the scenery would be much better on the Trek...

I think you should go through Chamba.

I'm thinking so too actually. There isn't any special reason why I was going to McL, it was just because I'll have around a week and I'll be coming up from Delhi. I'm really keen on riding the Kalka-Shimla toy train up to Shimla (although I checked and the Shivalik Deluxe already has a waiting list 140 deep for the very end of September )so I thought I'd go Delhi > Shimla > Mandi > McL > ? I'm just a bit conscious about spending all my time on rickety buses.

The trek can be done, hardly any travel by car. But you have very few days at your disposal. Try something less ambitious.

The route goes through McLeod's Ganj, Triund, crossing the Dhauladhar range (4,000 meters), cross Budhil river in a basket, Bajoli, and then cross Manimahesh range (4,500 meters). See http://image75.webshots.com/75/0/83/...ygHia_fs.j pg and check in Google maps. Some other time.

Wow, yeah, that sounds like hard work and I don't think 5 days will be enough given other movements that will have to be made. In which case I might skip McLeod altogether as I've heard from a few people that it's something akin to a buddhist monk zoo full of westerners engaged in losing/finding themselves/something else very significant. Neither of which is really my bag.

Hmmmm, so......what to do with 5 days starting from Shimla then I guess........

A suggestion - go to Churdhar. Solan, Rajgarh, Nauradhar, Tisri, Churdhar/Chureshwar Mahadev. Highest peak closest to Delhi. Some 11,600 ft. Motorable/Bus up to Nauradhar.

Which area would this be, near Shimla or someplace else?

I think it's just south of Shimla isn't it?

Anyway, to be honest I've pretty much decided to relax in Shimla for 3 days, walk up and down, take in the sights etc, as I'll have had a pretty hectic time in Rajasthan before I get there so I might just appreciate not having to rush off anywhere! I thought about possibly going up to Mandi, Rewalsar and Prashar for a couple of days and then just returning to Shimla and heading back to Delhi. I just hope I'm not disappointed as the original point of the trip to Himachal was to get to somewhere a bit interesting (ie somewhere not rammed full of westerners/seekers/gangs of Israelis listening to trance music) and see some snow caps. Unfortunately with the time I've allowed this may not be possible.
