Question Places between Haridwar to Joshimath

Dear Friends,
I have planned to visit Valley of Flowers from 22.07.2010 to 02.08.2010. I wish to know the important places on the route from Haridwar to Joshimath. I have inquired about a TATA Sumo for our group of 6 which is for Rs. 4500/-. Buses may charge Rs. 250-300/- per seat. I wish to know if these buses also halt to visit all these important places on the way?
Otherwise, is is worth hiring a Sumo & visit all those places?
Does anyone know any other transport service provider who may charge less?
Thanks & Regards
Bindumadhav

Hi friend,

The distance between Haridwar and Joshimath is nearly 300km.
If you travel by bus you will not get any chance to visit the places in between. But it may be difficult to visit all the places if you are travelling by Sumo too. So, I would suggest you to make a day's halt in between and see the beauty of Himalayas. If you can spare extra days then it would be more lovely to visit places like Devprayag, Rudraprayag, etc.

rs 4500 for how many days ?

what are you interested in ?
1} scenic places
2} old / ancient temples and caves
3} rafting

nothing like having your own transport / you can stop where ever you like or go where ever you want
May all beings be happy, May all be healthy, May people have the well-being of all{humans & animals} in mind, May no body suffer in any way.

Many Thanks Dear Bisa & BKS,
I am interested in Scenic Places & Ancient temples. Where can I get very very detailed map of the region from Haridwar to Joshimath & Joshimath to Badrinath? Can I have a Private vehicle from Joshimath to Haridwar on early morning on my return journey? It is said that vehicles are not permitted to run at night. I can start from Joshimath at early morning & I have train from Haridwar to Delhi at 12 at mid night. If you have any site or info, please send it to me on bindumadhavambike@yahoo.com
Rs 4500/- are the charges of Tata Sume from Haridwar to Joshimath for 6 persons. Do the private vehicle owners agree to visit all places of tourist interest on the route?

Regards

Hi bindumadhav,

I think 4500/- is little more. Generally share Sumos charge 350/- per seat from Haridwar. They take 10 passangers. So, if you book all the seats it would be cheaper. Still then I would suggest you to check out the Sumo charges for the whole trip. As bks said it should not be 4500/-.

Hi bks,

I have read many of your threads. They are really useful. Specially the Panch Badri thread. Our friend Madhav can visit Adi Badri on his way if he starts early and book a Sumo.

@ Bindumadhav

like bisa suggested in post #2 stay over night at some place , enjoy the route

i do not have this years rate 2 years back sumos from rishikesh gurudwara to govind gath {starting point for VOF}
were around 175 to 200 a seat { works out to 2000 max for entire sumo}now the prices must have increased {every day early morning a fleet of sumos leave the rishikesh gurudwara for govind gath}

do not give full money in advance {pay on reaching your destination and strictly avoid internet bookings / you can always get a good bargain on the spot no need to book in advance

maps are available in most of the book shops expecially at railway station book outlets

between rishikesh and dev prayag you will find various camp sites and resorts where you can stay close to ganga

ramkund resort is just above the ganga, woodern cottages at shiv puri are good

vashist gufa / temples around sri nagar /

also do visit the panch badri thread click here Panch Badri

as bisa said all prayags are beautiful, the ganga gets it name from dev prayag onwards it great to take a dip here

you can visit badrinath / some people love to visit auli the rope railway experience is great

once when i visited VOF in august there was continous rain / every thing was so damp i could not take photos
you need to check the rain situation

Hi friends,

The last information I recieved this year from one of my friends at Haridwar. Sumos and Jeeps were charging 1800/- per day at the starting of 4 dham Yatra. But as the rush increased the rates jumped to 3200-3800. But this is because of the Yatra season. The rates will come down to normal after mid July.

This route has several scenic places + ancient temples as well. If you can get a sumo to yourself there are many places you can go. Some of my favourites are:
- Dhara Devi
- Auli
- Panch Badri (remember there is a trek to Bhavishya Badri and you have to take a detour for Adi Badri from Karanprayag).
- If interested you can do Sapta Badri (refer the link given above by BKS)
- Along with Sapta Badri you can also do Kalpeshwar.
- Valley of flowers
- Hemkund Sahib
- There are a few temples in Srinagar as well.

I found the Outlook Travellers Uttrakhand book + Nest and Wings book on Uttrakhand as the best source of information + maps.

- Amit.

Hi,

I am planning a trip to Auli from New Delhi.

I have booked the train tickets from Delhi to Haridwar on 22-Mar-2012 and return to Haridwar on 27-Mar-2012 night.

So, I have 5 days from Haridwar to Haridwar, following is my plan:

> Day 1 (23-Mar) - Getdown by train at 4 am and catch GMOU bus from Haridwar to Joshimath at 5:30
am. I would like to know how is GMOU buses, is there any comfortable buses
available, I am going with my family 2 Adults and one 9 year and one 3 year kids.
Planning to Stay in Joshimath, there are 2 GMVN properties,
Joshimath(Main Bazar) and Joshimath(NEW), I would like to know which one is
better in terms of facility and cleanliness and accessability from Bus stand.
I am planning for Joshimath(NEW), pls advise.

> Day 2 (24-Mar) - Take Cable car to Auli and spend whole day there. I heard that accomodations in
Auli is very expensive, can anyone advise me if it is a good decision to stay in
Auli or Joshimath. Night Stay in Auli or Joshimath.

> Day 3 (25-Mar) - Take a Bus to Kedarnath or Badrinath from Joshimat in the afternoon. I am
wondering buses are available during this season. Stay in Kedarnath or Badrinath.
I am unable to find any accomodation on the internet, can anyone advise if this
is the right time to go there. If now what can be other options for Day 3.

> Day 4 (26-Mar) - Come back to Joshimath and go to Auli again. Stay in Joshimath.

> Day 5 (27-Mar) - Take bus back to Haridwar and catch 11 pm train to Delhi.

I am open to recreate the whole plan to see some sceneric views and stay there, I want to go Auli and show snow to my family.

Pls do let me know your comments and can send me at pkulshrestha@gmail.com.

Regards,
Pankaj

GMOU buses are like any ordinary buses. There are no deluxe buses on Joshimath route.

At Joshimath, the new GMVN is better. It's a 200 m walk up from the road though, if you're arriving by bus. Get down near old GMVN.

GMVN at Auli has dormitory accom also, which is cheap.

Badrinath/Kedarnath will be closed, but you can go to the hot spring at Tapovan on Day 3. About 30 mins by share-jeep from Joshimath.
