Hiya...
You had mentioned that you are introducing your newly wedded wife to the rigours of trekking by going to Pindari...??????? Not that it is any of my business, but seriously, do it only if she has the inclination for trekking. Agreed, Pindari is a trek which even some school kids do; but then, that is entirely different. Has she been a trekking enthusiast too..? I sure hope so. Anyways... If you are going before the end of April, you don't need to worry about the accommodation at all. It is only when the school / college breaks start, that the Pindari trekking route becomes a free-for-all...! Dhakuri, Khati, Dwali, Phurkia - All the places have loads and loads of extra sleeping rugs and sheets and blankets and quilts and they always, repeat always have room for that one more person...! So, relax... When I was there, I was the solo occupant at each and every one of the places, both while going towards the Pindari Glacier as well as while on my return...! Unusual, yes... But then, the trekking route to Pindari had just opened that season when I left... Virgin beauty all over...! Avoid carrying unnecessary stuff unless u wanna camp outside too.. Yes, a guide can be useful, but it's better to have a porter instead, who'll atleast help u with carrying some of your stuff...!!! Any info. u want, just lemme know... Cheers...! |

I am also planning on this trek in the mid April timeframe.
This is great info -- thanks to everyone. Quick question about porters -- I have a small backpack that I can carry myself as well as a "duffle bag"(not too heavy -8 to 10 kg). WOndering if the porter will find the duffle bag too awkward to carry on the trek .. should I be getting another backpack ? I am going solo and just in the planning process. If it works , I would love to join up. thanks |

It depends on what's in the duffel bag. Porters are used to carrying all kinds of loads (gas cylinders, e.g. - the large 20 kg kind!) and usually have their own rope to strap them on. If your bag doesn't have any sharp, hard things on the inside making carrying uncomfortable, I don't think they'll object. I'm sure a backpack wud be better if u have one spare, but I don't think u shud specially buy a new one.

March is a definite no-no...! This year atleast...!
Heavy snow fall in end-Jan and right through till mid-Feb will surely take much much longer to melt off... There are a whole lotta those teeny weeny frozen paths that one needs to cross; and they can get to be quite dicey if you go very early... And about the stuff u carry - Well, I had two small bags myself. One a slightly larger one actually. And I just left one of the bags at the TRH, Dwali and carried on with the other on my way to the Pindari Glacier. This is something which is really helpful on a trek to a place like Pindari - you come down the very same way that you go up... So, it's ideal...! It surely is much better than what a fellow trekker, an American, did on his way to Pindari - He just tore off his heavy bath towel (wonder why he was carrying it, as he didn't seem to the bathing type, anyways...!) as it was getting to be too heavy with each step; and converted it into a small face towel for the rest of the trek...! The last one heard, some bird was using the remnant of the towel as a cushion in it's now 'oooh, just soo cool' nest...! Another thing which I though I'll share with you - At the TRH in Dwali, when I was to leave in the morning, the caretaker didn't have change for a Rs.500/- note. He said it wasn't an issue at all - and that I could simply pay up on my way back...!!! You just have to, repeat, just have to, admire their simplicity. Hats off, really...!!! Btw, he wasn't to be found on my way back three days later, and so I left the money with a Chai-shop in a village closeby...!!! Cheers...!!! |

half a mule...?????
which half, sir...??? just kiddin...!!! maggi (both the soups and the noodles) and aaloo parathas u will get at all the villages along the route and also at each and every one of the kmvn tourist rest homes; so, avoid carrying maggi...! actually - thatz usually all u'll get...!!! assuming that u will also carry atleast one small day bag, and your wife will carry nothing, (other than a 10 litres water bottle) (ok, ok - just kiddin' - just 2 litres...!), still u don't need two porters - one should do. and if there is any possibility of rain around that time, just get yourself a 20 bucks poncho...! most of the trips to pindari are day trips, with people leaving phurkia early in the morning and getting back to spend the night again at phurkia or maybe, furtherdown... so, u don't really need to take your camping equipment too... if u really want to camp outside, by all means take all your stuff... the danish guys i was with, camped at all the kmvn joints - but they set up their tents outside and only used kmvn for chai...! it doesn't make sense to carry stuff and then not use it... right...?! cheers...!!! |

help required regarding pindari trip
we are planning to go to pindari middle of May. We are a group of around 7-8 persons. All members of the group will be able to meet up at haldwani by 9.30 AM at the earliest.
1. Can you let me know what is the best mode of transportation from Haldwani to Bageswar. 2. How much time does it take to reach there? |

Q1). hire a sumo/or some bigger vehicle, so that all of you fit in. You will need this all the way till Song, which is around 35 kms ahead of bageshwar. Q2). Kathgodam to Almora - around 3 hours. Almora to Bageshwar - another 3 hours. Bageshwar to Song - around 1.5 hours. Check this: http://almoraboy.blogspot.com/2008/0...i-pindari.html
