Pics of Chakrata (Garhwal), Ooty n Kodaikanal (South India)

Hi all,

I am posting a link to some of my albums.

1). Chakrata, Deowan and Kanasar in Garhwal himalayas
2). Ooty in South India
3). Kodaikanal in south India.

I have also put some comments next to the pics in the Chakrata album. It is really a very beautiful place and not yet discovered by the city hordes yet ...

Heyyy...

I had written detailed comments next to all the pics - including the cobra lily. Didn't u get to see them??
Anyways, cobra lilies grow in the higher reaches of the himalayas. Animals usually don't eat them because they contain alkaloids and they look like a cobra. You can find lots of them in the forests near Chakrata, Ramgarh n Mukteshwar ... other places also but i have found them in these 3

Regards,
P

ummm .. ok here it is..

Chakrata lies in the dehradun district at an altitude of 7000 feet+. Deovan (it means God's forest, pronounced as deb + wan) resthouse is 12 kms from Chakrata and lies at an altitude of 9300 feet. u can reach chakreata from dehradun via 2 paths ...
1) go via mussorie (kempty falls)
2) go via kalsi.

in the second option, remember that the roads are one-sided. So therre are gates at kalsi and chakrata. they open and close at predefined intervals. so you should leave dehradun at around 7:15 am. then follow the himalayan foothills and turn right at kalsi. the gate at kalsi opens at around 8:30 am and then the traffic can go upto chakrata. u can reach chakrata well before lunch .

in chakrata there are some small hotels and a small market. the town even has a cyber cafe now. but we stayed at the forest guest house everyday. one of them was built in 1870s and it was a real pleasure to spend one night in such an old house. u need to knoiw somebody who is a central government ermployee to bookit for you. for central govt employes n theri relatives, charges are 75 bucks per night. for civilians, it is around 500 bucks per night. if u go to the deovan rest house after chakrata, buy some vegetables from the chakrata market coz there is nothing availabe in deovan. the forest guards there @ deovan will cook it for u.

Cobra lilies seem to be fairly common in Garhwal. I have seen them in the Valley of Flowers, near Badrinath, and on the way to Dodital from Uttarkashi. They belong to the Arum family (Araceae), and the hood (spathe) of the plant is apparently meant to attract flies and other insects. Here are pictures of two different species of cobra lily, which we saw on the trail from Sangam Chatti to Dodital:

Interestingly, according to `Flowers of the Himalaya,' parts of the plant are edible:

Quote:
The tuberous roots of many species [of the genus Arisaema, to which cobra lilies belong] can be ground into a flour and eaten. Care must be taken as the tubers contain minute sharp particles which can damage the digestive tract.

Update on one-way traffic

Any references to the one-way system between Kalsi and Chakrata are now invalid.

It was withdrawn on 26 Jan '08.
