Petzl Headlamps

Folks.

Im looking for a good headlamp one which is longlasting and durable to operate in temperatures at Himalayas. I somewhere read about Petzl LED headlamps in google pages. I read about Chinese makes ranging from Rs. 300 to 800 but someway experience say they dont work long.

If someone has used Petzl pls share the details, model & make type, price and where can I find it in India. Im keen to buy it.

Regards,
Amit

I found the Petzl LED headlamps at Adventure 18 in Delhi. They'd just been brought in. Priced at a whooping 3000 it claims to last about 100 hrs. Has 4 LED's. Not very sure if you have the option of switching on 'n' LEDs at a time. Didn't note down the model number. You will find a wide variety of these Petzl lamps here.

Cheers

depends what you want it for. petzl tikka is a very good headlamp...long burn time and pretty bright. Good for general camping etc. I have the even tinier e-lite which is a great emergency light, ultra lightweight though needs 'special' watch batteries.
For 'proper' mountaineering i.e. nighttime walks through seracs/crevasse fields, i would want something a bit more heavy duty such as the myo xp

Have a look at the petzl website for more details.

Reviews

Petzl headlamps are amongst the best headlamps.

Also, if you get a chance to buy Princeton tec, they are really good too.

I own four headlamps at this time, so can accordingly give you review of the three major headlamp makers I am familiar with.

Princeton Tec is focused on HL, and I own an EOS, which is minimalistic, with four levels of lighting, high, medium, low and blinking mode. I use this largely for hiking and reading at night. Using three triple AAA batteries, the headlamp lasts surprisingly long (many weeks of night reading). PT is the only one in the market with waterproof headlamps.

PT also makes a bunch of other models. Apex is one of their top of the line. Battery pack makes it heavy.

Now on Petzl. I own a Myo XP. Simply awesome in it's ability to illuminate an entire room (adequate enough to do your basic things like set up a tent, and so on). It's heavier than the PT Eos, but this one is a work horse and I use this for climbing. Batter pack is on the headband, and takes 3 AAs.

I also own an older non LED lights model from Petzl (80s-90s model), and takes 4 Cs, but is brighter than anything I have seen. I don't know what model this is, but was initially made for caving. Just goes to illustrate that Petzl is great at Headlamp technology.

Fourth one I have, is Black Diamond Vectra IQ. If this is anything to go by, avoid Black Diamond headlamps. Unreliable, not bright enough after initial loss of power from batteries, and with poor finish, not my favourite at all.

For all round mountaineering, would suggest Petzl Myo XP, if you can find it. If you want something basic, Petzl has other makes as well.

Reliability

Ah, here's one reason why you should avoid knockoff makes and stick to name brands like Petzl or PT.

Reliability and longetivity of the headlamps. Spend Rs. 800 on a knockoff, and it would work for you at half the quality for probably an year or less. My PT Eos has lasted me so far for four years and still running strong. Never given out on me ever. (only make sure to pack a set of back up batteries).

Also, if you are headed out on an expedition or say returning at night from local climb, and if your headlamps gives in, a minor adventure can quickly turn into an epic nightmare. (pun intended.

On the other hand, if reliability is important, definitely avoid cheap Chinese LED battery lamps (head models or not).

Their LEDs tend to burn very quickly, even if they claim to last an eternity.

In Germany it's new 63 Euros...

I have a Petzl Tikka, just a simple one, and it's great. The energy consumption is very very low.

I guess energy would be your biggest problem, as in low temperatures batteries don't last long....

Last time I bought an Alpine headlamp the best option was Petzl, and the model had a battery pouch that would hang around your neck. This keeps the batteries warm against your body so you can use regular AA, instead of expensive lithium. Cold is bad for batteries.

Hi,

I have used Petzl Tikka, Petzl Zoom and the Petzl Myo-Belt XP.
Basically, I have been using Petzl headlamps for the past 12 yrs
at least and have needed them in many situations, at camp, on
early morning alpine starts, late night returns from trips after
epics and off course, to go to the toilet in the dark :-)!

I can offer a few suggestions. Firstly, avoid halogen lamps. LED lamps are the best bet these days. Tikka is great for
certain things such as smaller trips and backpacks etc but if
you wanted some good lighting on an alpine climb, I would
recommend the Myo XP. I myself used the belt version of
this which has the advantage that the battery pack is
detached form the main headlamp and can thus hang inside
your down jacket or other clothing and be kept warm to
increase battery life.

Other brands that are considered good by friends who have used
them are Black Diamond and Princeton Tec even though I have
not used those. I have used other pieces of gear made by Petzl
and can safely say that they make one of the best engineered
products.

Safe climbing,

.arun
