No not permit but some people collect money [ heavy demand ] at AULI showing you a board that this area comes under NANDA DEVI SANCTUARY BOARD.This board is fixed near TOP MOST lift station and these guys are carrying walkie-talkie. We refused to pay and this guy traced me to my hotel room and demanded money.

This boilsmy blood as I need govt. receipt for huge payments like this....I sent him out !!

I think a permission from FOREST OFFICER is required as trips of BENGAL were carrying a paper on which they applied to FOREST OFFICER for permission.

But certainly there is some hanky panky going on...rules are not clear and not being informed. If you have somelocal guide....he can handle -you know !!

Himadventures is right, this area lies under buffer zone of Nandadevi Sanctury and Forest department do collect entery fee which is a bit high. I did this trek in May 2005. I had similar experience like Himadventures, a guy at Auli asked if i had payed the entery fee at Ghat if not pay-up at Auli. However, i payed only at their main office in Joshimath

A permit is indeed needed for trekking across the Kuari Pass. Much of the area falls under the buffer and transition zones of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (NDBR). I was told by my trekking agent that a permit is not needed for the portion of the trek that covers Panha and other villages below it on the southern side of the Pass.

When I trekked across the Kuari Pass last month, from Auli to Nijmula, I received the permit in Joshimath from the office of the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Nanda Devi National Park. It is given after registering the names of the trekkers, the guide, porters, and other staff. I paid a total of Rs. 870 for a permit for the whole trek. There is absolutely no hanky panky, for the permit is also a receipt that clearly mentions the name of the person it is issued to, the amount paid, and the breakup of that amount under various headings. The permit also records the route that will be followed, and the location of each day's camping site. Here are the rates as specified in the permit:

• Trail management fee for periods up to seven days: Rs 60 per adult trekker, Rs. 30 per student/child trekker, and Rs. 20 per guide/porter.
• Trail management fee for periods longer than seven days: Rs 100 per adult trekker, Rs. 50 per student/child trekker, and Rs. 40 per guide/porter.
• Ecology fee for each mule: Rs. 25 per day.
• Camping site fee for each tent of size up to 6ft x 7ft: Rs. 50 per night.
• Camping site fee for each tent larger than 6ft x 7ft: Rs. 100 per night.

Given the importance of the NDBR, these fees seem rather nominal. A copy of the permit is given to the trek operator. My permit was checked by a forest ranger, wielding the ubiquitous walkie talkie, near the Auli ropeway UTP. There is also a Forest Department office in a tent near the UTP which issues permits. I once got a permit there for a walk from Auli up to Gorson bugiyal, which also is a part of the NDBR.

You dont want need any permit for that but if you want rek to Nanda devi base camp of mana region then need permit.
One more thing try to mke you programe early because snow start in high region.

There's some confusion around re what permits are required.

While it is correct that an Inner Line Permit (issued by the District authorities) is not required, as Raghu has detailed u do need permission from the Forest Dept to trek in certain zones. Of course this does not require any lengthy procedure like giving photos, etc, u just have to give the details and fees required at the places mentioned.

Permit / FOREST ENTRY PERMISSION from DFO is required otherwise you are asked to pay a handsome amount. Checkout what nyraghu said...
I think if you want to avoid it-you can turn "E" from Kuari Pass meadow where a roman trail like route goes towards TAPOBAN. I do not know if TAPOBAN is being monitored or not but if you are coming to AULI or trekking up from AULI - you will be charged !

When we did Kuari Pass trek, starting from Ghat and ending at Tapoban in 1995, we did not take any permit as we were not aware of this requirement. We were not checked at any point of our trekking route.

Forest guards are at Suraithota and Lata. While they can't monitor each and every individual trekking in the area, they do often receive info from other sources, and u can be fined for trekking without the required permit.
One more thing: Since the fees can be as low as 300 bucks for an adult, just pay the amount, ok? The forest dept needs the money, and no one's going to go broke with this measly amount. U'll possibly be spending a lot more on hiring equipment and maybe even man-power - just factor the fees into your budgets.

There really is no need for us to start detailed discussions on how these fees can be avoided.

I am planning to this trek in first week of April. And we do not intend to take a guide, just a porter. Is it mandatory to take a guide for getting DFO permission? and how long does it take?
