I had a look at Outlook Traveler's 75 holiday ideas in hill stations and I thought that was pretty good book, lots of ideas for a break in the mountains of India from The Himalaya to Munnar. Good info and lots of good photos to give you a feel for the destinations!!
At 225 Rps it's got to be worth a look!!!!! |

I haven't actually read the book on Trekking but I very much doubt you will get very much advise on something like mountain craft in such a book (I'm assuming this is what you mean by survival tips) and the maps may not be all you need to to do some serious trekking.
Trekking maps are difficult to come by in India but they do exist, try to find them as these are ideal for trekking without a guide they are published by the India mapping comission or something like that(not sure of the name). The Indian version of the Ordinance Survey in Gt Britain |

The official mapping commission is called the Survey of India. All maps near the borders are considered "classified" under an arcane law. So I cannot get an official contour map of my own city of Mumbai; as also nowhere in the Himalayas except a miniscule portion near the Shimla Rampur area.
The same Govt sells satellite pics abroad of the same areas at 40 to 100 dollars a sheet as they want to recover the cost of the satellite mapping versions. Even these maps DO NOT show contours. Showing contours in India is an offence. Technically one could go to Prison charged with treason or letting on official secrets. I am not joking. No one has been prosecuted yet, a.f.a.i.k. Honestly, the day the S.o.I. begins to sell these maps officially, i will throw a party to all the map-starved souls in my orbit.

i am one of those map-starved people... i agree with you avidtrekker. the SoI need to relook at some of their policies.
back to OT, i have the Outlook 75 holidays in the hills book and i thought it was a decent attempt, with well structured information and good photographs. i hope they will have similar standards with this one too. |

another map starved here..
My only collection is all the trekking series Maps of Survey of India. I recently spoke to Remote sensing guys in Hyderabad for the border maps.. They said that they can give me the satelite imagery maps.. but that wont be of any use to me.. woukld have to get it procesed to get it in map form.. This is like "Giving sugar cane to some who is looking for sugar'
