open peaks

Open peaks refers to peaks which do not lie in the restricted areas but for which foreigners need a permit to climb. Peaks which do not need a permit to climb are referred to as trekking peaks.

I have been climbing for the past several years, in the Indian Himalaya as well as in the Nepal Himalaya, and having had to deal with the IMF(Indian Mountaineering Foundation) innumerable times, got the info. from there.

This information is not on the website but if you contact IMF about any specific peak, they will give you the info. The permit for peaks within the Inner Line is given by the Ministry of Defence so you can also get it from there but it is easier and less hassle to get it from IMF since they also regulate the number of expeditions to any peak. Many peaks in Sikkim are closed for climbing because the locals consider them holy but some are open. It is possible for you to get permission for an expedition to some peaks lying within the Inner Line in Eastern Karakorams, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Nanda Devi Main lies wholly within the National Park which is closed but Nanda Devi East is possible. If you wish to traverse the ridge between Nanda Devi East and Nanda Devi Main, then that is possible too as long as you approach the mountain from outside the sanctuary.
