North India technical trek
I am russian hiker/climber and very happy to be in this forum
You can see my homepage at www.neftekamsk.ru/~kamalove/eindex.html. I intend to be in India in 2005 or 2006 summer and would like to have a hard technical trek in Ladakh and/or Himachal Pradesh. I shedule 1 week for acclimatization/monastery visiting (near Leh probably) and then 2-3 weeks trekking by difficult passes in relatively wild regions. I want to go over passes using rope and other gear (I have all the technical gear), and may be climb some peaks up to 6000m. I do not like treks by easy paths, mules and so on... I have 1:180000-1:250000 maps of that region, but passes difficulty is not clear there. What the region can you recommend to me? Where can I find passes definitions and other suchlike information? Thanks you. I will be very happy to meet likeminded climbers. Sorry for my bad english ![]() |

Climbing in India
Being alone and want to trek/climb in India-well I won't say go solo.
Tough trails are many and some options are listed below.. 1. Stok Kangri ( Climbing in Ladakh) 2. Many trails in Ladakh & Zanskar are challenging. 3. Kinner Kailash Circuit ( Himachal Pradesh): Sternuous 4. Roop Kund: Sternuous 5. Markha Valley:Sternuous I am sure you know what you want to do ! |

We have in Russia a good tradition: mountaineers are writing reports about passages and mountain routes. More of these reports are available in www. Here is a full information: what a difficult is that passage, how much ropes you must use there, what the sort of gear...
May be there is such things about Himalaya? |

The Manirang Pass in Kinnaur is difficult. You could combine it with Manirang peak. Some Passes to cross over from Uttaranchal to Himachal are pretty much difficult in April-May. Borasu Pass, Singha Ghati, Lamea ghati are some of them. The Tentugiri Pass (18000 feet plus) right above tourist-dense Manali is quite difficult and practically unknown to trekkers except the die hard variety. You might lost on solo trips on all these routes... I will not advise solo trips on these difficult routes because the maps are un-reliable and local guides also get lost on some of these routes. All the best and Happy trekking.

kamalove !
I had been to your website-and not doubt you are an experienced adventurist and very good photogrpaher. BUT ! Trekking and climbing in Himalayas is all together different than else where in the world.I would suggest-as Avid also mentioned-donot try to go solo. I am sure this is enough for a experienced guy like you. I really liked your work man ! ![]() |

Thanks for good words. Of course I will not go solo. I hope to gather a team of my friends. To regret, most of them not have a time, or money, or experience. Will see, will see...
If anybody interested to see some more pictures from our 24-days trip Altai-Mongolia-Tuva, you can see: http://www.neftekamsk.ru/~kamalove/tuva04/photo.html pic number 137 - it's me ![]() |

pin parvati pass
Hi Kinky Lizard
I was rather amused to read a kinky lizard doing mantalai-mud. Anyways you gave me the right lead. I'm lucky based in Bathinda. We are a group of ten planning Manikaran-mud in late august. Can you tell me how technical is the climb if done in august. We've been trekking since 12 years but so far no technical treks. Have you done mantalai-mud? Throw some light. ciao Lucky |

hey lucky,
before you try the entire group need to physically conditioned , and very careful and i cannot stress this enough. This is because an hour from mantalai you'll need to wade thru boulder fields and scree and a hard climb. This is if u decide to camp at the lake but u can choose to continue till a small grassland below the pass it is a long haul thru moraine, snowfields, piles of scree and boulders, from the lake this should take you somewhere between 5-7 hrs, depending on the load the route chosen. Again try and get a reliable guide as the path is not a clear trail, or if you can you can follow a guided tour should any be there, or a local gaddi. August, and crevices if any should be visible but do play safe and rope up, with a reliable person in belay role. pass to mud is easy but long travelling except for a descend over a steep scree slope. Should u need more info mail me, and listen what "avid" and "himadventures" have to say, |

Hey I think you ought to try this trek - Gangotri-Bhojwas-Gaumukh-Tapovan-Sundarvan Now here is the kick. Tapovan can be your base camp to clim Mt Shivling. It this it would be a great experience. I have been to Tapovan but dont have the technical expertise to do mountaineering. Trust me on this - this trek makes the difference between trekking and mountaineering. |

There is one good technical ( so I have been told ) trek from Gaumukh to Badrinath via the Kalindi Khal . I gathered a lot of info on that one last year , but couldn't do it..
Worth considering , Kamalove... |
