For 202 it might be too late. I took the course starting in March and was just able to get in when I applied in mid December. My course had a stated capacity of 75 but there were about 80 of us to start (not much sense in saying no to foreigners' $).
There weren't very many military in my basic course. I think about 14-15 of the 80. |

Thanks all for your reply. Yesterday I spoke with NIM personnel he did not tell me anything about current state about vacancies in 202 batch.
I am sending duly filled forms today itself. Let`s hope I make it to this batch as I have already applied for 1 month leave and fortunatly got it approved. Swapnil, In case I get confirmation for April batch I will need your help while purchasing required personal items in Pune for mountaineering. Cheers, maverick_sandy |

Maverick ....I'll be glad to help you out
...but you really don't need to carry much equipments from pune itself ...they will provide you everything...rucksack,ice axe, ropes,Karabiner ,sling, windproof & feather jackets, helmet,Koflas boots, rock climbing shoes & even lunch box , mug, watter bottle...While filling application form (No. 6) course serial no. option - a) & b) put 202 as first option - a) ....you can fill second option b) & opt for course commencing later on e.g. 204 .. if 202 batch already full..... http://protrek.multiply.com |

In terrible position...
I dispatched my application forms and DD for Basic Mountaineering course on 14 Feb from Pune by Register post as Speed post is not available there.
Just now talked with NIM person over phone and he told me that it has not reached yet... I am feeling helpless .. I got 1 month leave but waiting for confirmation of seat in 24 April basic course ..waiting because of pathetic service of Indian Post... Don`t know what to do... |

March to May is more than enough time for preparation...I'll advice walking daily with 15-20 KG weight in rucksack for about 12 - 14 KM ...you should be able to cover this distance within 2 hours . During your basic course @ NIM for (earlier) few days you will be going to Tekhla ( 12 KM from NIM institute ) for rock climbing practice . So practice accordingly . Your schedule during NIM will be like this : go through images NIM 058,NIM 059,NIM 060 ,NIM 063 carefully from link given below . ( Ignore NIM 062 schedule its for Search & Rescue course only ). http://protrek.multiply.com/photos/a...ch-April_2006# All the best for your course ! |

i have done the ladies basic course in 2005 from the NIM. march onwards is sufficient time for physical preparation... your focus should be on increasing your stamina... and most importantly, your flexibility for the rockclimbing! getting used to walking with weight is definitely a good idea. doing a long walk with a ruck sack 2-3 times a week is certainly helpful. the course is almost a month long... so be very certain of your injured leg... i am sure it will an unforgettable experience...as mine was! ![]() |

hi
my own experience has been that thinking about the grade is really not that important... just try to give it your 100% every moment you are there... they observe you pretty much all the time! |

@ la vagabonde and @ swapnil
Thank you very much for your advice. It will be very helpful.Iam trying to walk daily atleast 1 hr.In which I can coverOnly 6-6.5 km without carrying any load. But I will increase the speed slowly. Is any thing else any exersize which is needed to practice to increase the skill or capacity of rock climbing.Because I dont have any formal training on rock climbing.Besides that i want to read something about equipments used in mountaineering. can you tell me any book related to that. ![]() |

Got confirmation over phone for admission to BMC (to be conducted on 24 April)!!!
I am planning my travel. Can anyone tell me how much time will be required to reach Uttarkashi from Haridwar? I am going to Delhi by air. From Delhi to Haridwar by train... |

You'll need to catch a bus from Haridwar to Rishikesh, then switch to another bus for Uttarkashi. Haridwar to Rishikesh was only half an hour or so, I believe, but Rishikesh to Uttarkashi is 8 - 8.5 hours, depending on whether the driver needs to stop to beat a passenger.
You could also try to get a ride in a Jeep. It'd probably be marginally faster but no more comfortable, if at all. |

ani rch you don't need to do any special exercise ..just try to increase your stamina, breathing control during long walks ,muscle toughening exercise ( esp for finger holds during rock climbing) & you don't need any formal training as this is basic course... they will teach you everything from scratch... Don't worry ..you will be fine ...there are three main aspects on which your performance during this course will be evaluated... Rock Climbing/Bouldering , Snowcraft , Icecraft...& securing good marks in theory paper will be additional advantage ..your rope instructor will observe closely while you performing these activities & depending on that you will get grade . As for reading concern I don't know any book but these links will prove useful http://girivihar.org/Equip.html http://girivihar.org/tips.html http://girivihar.org/manual.html http://girivihar.org/sportc.html Last edited by Swapnil : Mar 6th, 2008 at 20:32. Regarding reaching Uttarkashi : ...in addition to info provided by beklemmung.. make sure you reach Rishikesh before 12 - 1 pm as hardly any buses/jeeps ply between this route thereafter. |
