hi beklemmung,
Congrats on having done the course. I have done it from HMI,Darjeeling. I am poor in Hindi and I can say over there English is the main language of instruction,so u won't feel uncomfortable if u do your Advanced from there.

Hi there,
a silly question, but just wanted to know if we can leave some luggage behind at the institute while we go in the mountains? do they put everyone's stuff together in a cloak room or seperate lockers or what? i was planning to travel around a bit after the course, so needed more stuff and was wondering if i could take it with me there and leave it in a suitcase or a bag of sorts while we trekked.
also, one thin sweater, and two medium warm sweaters should suffice? what about the raincoat? i have a thing that doesnt really keep my legs below knees dry, should i get those raincoat pants to add to my ponchokinda thing?
pls let me know! i am leaving by end of this week!!! phew!!

Yes, you can leave luggage at the institute while in the mountains. They'll put everyone's things together in a locked room, so if you want to be extra safe you can lock your bag as well.
Clothing depends on what time of year your course is. We were in the mountains in late March and early April, and I didn't take any feather clothing, only a lightweight and heavyweight fleece. Wearing both of these with my shell was enough to keep me warm. Temps at night were generally no lower than -5C.
You should have gaiters for your lower legs (or NIM will supply some), and they'll supply "windproof" pants as well. I took my own waterproof pants, but it never rained. On some days snow will get in around your gaiters, and your lower legs and feet will get wet, regardless of your pants.

Travel to Uttarkashi
Mumbai to Delhi by plane or train
Delhi to Haridwar OR Rishikesh by bus [6 to 7 hrs]
Hari / Rishi to Uttarkashi by bus [6 to 8 hrs]

The Universe is an ellipsoid?... or a Spheroid?? If the sphere smiles... it becomes an ellipse. This IS Creation.
Thanx...and i hope buses are easily available...i hav not been to delhi or rishikesh either....hav no idea
Can i reach uttarkashi easily frm dehradun?

Yes. Haridwar and Dehra Dun are quite near each other. Take a share taxi from Dehra Doon to Rishikesh and you are on your way...

back from BMC
hi all,
just got back after the basic course at NIM! It was great. we were 85 of us and finally 80 completed the course. Had a good time climbing, digging, sweating, cribbing and enjoying together. There is a lot to learn up there in the mountains, a lot beyond mountaineering as well.
am wondering now how to display my little iceaxe batch to the best now..
just thought of saying hi to the rest of the NIM group.

Question?
Hey everyone. Im really glad to have found this forum on here. I guess this is the place i can have all my queries solved.
I am going on the BMC this october. Everything else planned, i have a question, not meaning to be judgemental of the students or staff at NIM. I am also a professional photographer and so would like to take some pictures during the course. what i wanted to know is whether it would be safe to take an expensive camera to NIM. is it alright to take an slr there and does one get a locker for daily use where a camera or other belongings can be kept safely.
really looking forward to any advise i can get.
CHEERS!

Pretty Safe.
The campus is pretty safe for keeping your stuff. Each room has lockable cupboards for keeping your belongings.
But once you are out of the campus and on the field things change. Then you have to really care for your stuff. But usually if you loose something it will be during the last 2-3 days. So be very careful during this phase.
The cameras which work best are the manual types especially in higher altitudes and in pretty cold conditions which you will encounter in October. Also am not sure if you will get any recharging facility once you are on the field. So take plenty of batteries.
Do not buy any camera rolls from the campus. I had 3 rolls which turned out be be duplicates and all my course photos were washed out.
Anyways all the best and prepare well for the course.

Mumbai to Uttarkashi (Nehru Inst. Mountaineering)
mumbai to uttarkashi in october
I am travelling to Mumbai around the first of October and will be travelling up to Uttarkashi via Dehradun to join the Nehru institute of Mountaineering. i am allowing aound 2 weeks to travel from Mumbai so as to give me chance to have a bit of a gander round. M course runs for a month, until the 18th of November and i plan to spend the remainder of November travelling about a bit, as before. I hope to spend time trekking, climbing/bouldering and maybe even trying out a bit of yoga, not to mention general immersion in the whole indian experience. I am travelling alone, 18 and male and subsequently am pooing it! was wodering if anyone will be in the area and fancies hooking up and travelling around a bit?
Also, absolutely any advice would be great too, where to stay, visit, eat, see, flights, trains jeeps...anything!
thanks!

Tsk, tsk, experienced traveller like u, why aren't u advising the man to go direct Bandra-Haridwar?andre,
Do u WANT to go to Delhi and Dehradun anyway? Otherwise there is the 9019 Dehradun Express daily from Mumbai via Delhi to Haridwar and Dehradun. U can board it at Bandra or Borivali. Be advised that it stops at almost every station on the way and takes almost 40 hours to get to HW! And 2nd class sleeper only. But u'll get to see India raw! Leaves Bandra 23.30 daily and arrives HW 15.10 2 days later. Dehradun arrival 17.30.
U can check the fare at http://indianrail.gov.in , it's not working right now.
From HW, there are buses next morning 7.30 and 9.30 to Maneri, via Uttarkashi - if HW administration's website is correct.
There shud be a direct bus from Delhi also, but it won't be more than 1 a day, leaving early.
Otherwise there are more options from Rishikesh - either direct or Rksh/Chamba and Chamba/Uki.
