NIM - Nehru Institute of Mountaineering

hi,as per my experince- yes it's long waiting, nowdays you have about a year long waiting for BMC
-yes you can use cellphone&tab, would be easy to use for 1st week or 10 days when you are staying in campus learning rock craft, after that you move up in mountains for snow/ice craft where charging will be a problem,in that case you can leave the valuables at campus itself
-For fitness do small treks with 15-20 kg load practise, running, exercise/weight training for legs, calf, thigh, shoulder and back muscles.
Guess, you can check NIM website for this

I have applied to NIM-BMC today by speedpost for OCT-2013 course. Can any one tell me how many days the institute take to send me confirmation letter.

Dear Balachandra,I have applied for the NIM BMC course of March - April, 2013. I sent them a mail first and they 'reserved' a place for me in the March-April Course.
As of now, it seems my registered post has not reached the NIM authorities.
Also, I'm surprised that Arkdeep (I apologize if I got the name wrong) could send a Speed Post since the Post Office I went to told me that there is no Speed Post facility to Uttarkashi!
Strange.
Hi everyone!
Ive signed up for the BMC course starting in Oct 2012.Need some help! What kind of shoes would i need to buy for the course?(ive heard u need to buy them early so you can "break" into them by walking around in them)Would woodlands be an apt choice to buy them? Also, the list on the website mentions 2 pairs...two pairs of new shoes necessary? I still have to "shop" for the rest of the articles(preparation!)and simultaneously dragging myself to the gym
Anybody going from Bangalore for this course? Looking forward to replies!
All the best and god bless!

life is what happens when ur busy making plans...
@shmeegol - Go for Forclaz 500. Woodland tends to slip on wet surfaces.

There is a VERY long and detailed thread on trekking shoes. Kindly go through that. The merits and de-merits of most shoes available (and many not available in India) have been discussed there.

You can look at Quechua Forclaz 500 Ventiv from www.decathlon.in and you can get it cheaper (I got it at Rs 2999) at their Bengaluru cash and carry store with some jugglery reg. membership card etc. They also have a sale called Sunday Madness or something, where they were selling it even cheaper a few weeks back. The shoe is lighter, more water resistant than woodland and has a good anti slip sole. Also it does not need too much of a break in. I walked in my new Forclaz for 2-3 days and took it on a 27 day, 220 km trek to Kailash and Mansarovar and back, in monsoons. The shoe was magic.Incidentally, I had splurged and bought Rs 10 K Adidas Terrex when I had done my Basic Course. It was overkill on my part. I still have those shoes but the Forclaz is much sturdier and has a sure grip.
You need only one pair. Even if you carry a second pair, you are likely to leave it behind at the institute as there would be no space to carry it since you would be issued a pair of largish snow boots, harness, sling, helmet, feather jacket and a sleeping bag which you have to carry in the rucksack, besides your own clothes and other essentials, on the trek to the glacier for ice and snow training.
Hey dood, I'm joining the BMC 227 NIM Batch i.e., 19th April to 16th May 2013. There is a facebook group for the same. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/bmc227/)
