Hi Kirk, and welcome again to IndiaMike.

People here will appreciate it if you avoid SMS/text language, it's an international board so plain English is the language, and it will be difficult or just plain irritating to many to try to follow anything else.

Also, try to find the best place for your queries and then post them once, don't repeat them in several places, can only confuse everyone including yourself, which is why board rules don't in fact allow for it. (And keep a note of posting dates of threads you're responding to, this one is somewhat older for instance. That's no problem as such, but it may lead to fewer results for you.)

Thanks, and keep enjoying.

Next year's BMC course will commence around 24 april 2009 . Refer there website for further details http://nimindia.org/nim/courses/training_programme.aspx
Yes ...getting admission to NIM or HMI is tough as these institute considered more prestigeous than others & hence more rush... also among total seats available many are reserved for defence/NCC/ITBP/Foreign quota leaving few private seats ..I'll suggest book at least 5-6 months in advance .

Congrats for completing BMC course successfully ! Glad to know you loved rock craft(after getting so much tensed about rock craft during preparation for BMC). Do share your experience with us & also waiting for pics .

Hey thanks for your reply, had been waiting for one. My fathers in the Navy so was wondering if -

1. Does defense imply only serving personnel or their families as well ?
2. If yes , is their a crowd for the defense quota as well ?

1) Sorry I don't know anything about this as I done this course as private candidate...better call nim office & get this thing confirmed.

2)Comparatively it will be much easier to get admission through defence quota rather than private quota (if its applicable as you say.)

NIM October 2008

Anybody going to NIM this October. I just got my confirmation for the Basic Course.

Also, is it absolutely necessary to carry trekking shoes, or sport shoes are fine?

You will be using your shoes for earlier few days while going to Tekhla for rock climbing (11 km from NIM) & for trek upto base camp/Gujjar hut from roadhead Bhukki (two way distance 54 km approx) if your sport shoes are comfortable & can sustain this much trek then surely you can use them.

Medical form

Hello folks,

This website has been an interesting read and has helped me a lot in my travels. I will be doing the Oct-Nov course this year (which isn't very far away, yaaay!). I have a question about the medical form however... I was under the impression that the institutes medical officer will conduct the test? Please do let me know if I'm wrong however, for now time is short!

I have been training over the last 2 months before now and could do about 8-10 km in about 50 mins to an hour. I have had to stop the training though since I had planned to travel for about 40-45days before the course started (currently in Jaisalmer woo!). So I really hope I will have what it takes, and a friend of mine who has done this course has told me that a lot of the course is being mentally fit too. I think I might have to count on my mental toughness than physical to take me through this course (still doing my squats and my pull ups etc in my hotel room though...)

Anyway, a reply will be muh appreciated, and goodluck to whoever else is doing the course.

Hi elysian_fields

You have complete the medical tests and shots mentioned in the form before going to NIM. At the NIM, once again the Dr will do a physical checkup.

You are right about the mental fitness, it will matter more over the physical

Best of luck and don't forget to enjoy

Cheers

anindya is right about medical test (but if you're getting your medical form filled up by your family doctor then you might be able to skip few tests ; )

Wish you all the best for the course...surely this will going to be your lifetime experience !

Thanks for your replies guys. I'm on the road so I can't have it done by my family doc, and I've tried the govmt hospital but he was not interested...and it seemed like there were a lot more needy people there. There is a doctor here however who is more than happy to perform the 'quick test'. I am however not sure if thats good, for I'd like to know now if I'm unfit, and not when I'm on the mountain. Hmm but anyway, he will be my last resort. Got my lab stuff all done and it seems like I'm normal.

ONE WEEK!

Just a note: If you are considering DMAS Manali as an option - drop it!! I did the BMC this year, and didn't find time to write a review yet.... but let me tell you the overall experience is very poor. Not worth the 26 days .. just a word of friendly advice.

Regards

gobbledegeek I heard that its easy to get "A" grade from DMAS Manali is that true ? if it is then I guess it might be a good option to do Basic from DMAS Manali & advance from NIM or HMI as most portion for advance course is common with basic course & its rather tough to get "A" grade from HMI or NIM ....
