The permit for Gangotri trek is normally available from Uttarkashi & dehradoon. I do not know how far the permission & restrictions makes sense as because, till now no developmental aspects has been seriously looked into by the regulatory authorities & the entire trek from Gangotri to Tapovan gives a barren look by rampant felling of trees.
Tapovan however is extremely beautiful.

Change of Fax No. of DFO, Uttarkashi
Attention to all trekkers who are willing to go Gomukh or beyond, that the existing Fax No:- 01374-222964 of DFO, Uttarkashi (as mentioned in the .pdf file circulated by Uttarakhand Government) has been changed. I have been informed by a clerk of that office that the permission department for Gangotri National Park has been shifted to any other annexed building. So, therefore, this existing Tel No. as-well-as Fax. No is of no use. I have tried to fax my letter several times in last couple of days but could not send the letter. Now the new Fax No:- 01374-223693. I have successfully sent my permission letter to the desired destination i.e. DFO, Uttarkashi.
bangali mata and mouni baba is there..

hi there,
Planning for Gangotri - Tapovan -Nandanvan/NeelTaal in mid - Oct. The first concern is the permit, I have sent a letter to the DFO,Uttarkashi, Sent a FAX to 01374-223693. What else needs to be done? As we will be reaching at Uttarkashi on Sunday, I guess it would be impossible to get the permit on that day. What u folks say? spoke with a guide Kuldeep Sing and he is asking for 700/- @ day. Porter 350/- @ day. He also mentioned that, If some token money paid in advance, he could arrange the permit beforehand. Is it a trusrworthy piece of info:? whatever,I did this trekking in 1998, hence the permit was not born that time. Have to re do evrything after marriage for my bitter(not a spelling mistake) half. Any other suggestions, would be highly appreciated.
P.S. Pals, a typo/error should be forgiven after 3 beers I think

At first you should talk over phone to DFO, Uttarkashi about your planning and collect the permit number. The permit number will be very needful to you when you collect the permission. I think the office will be closed on Sunday. If Sunday is closed, then you will stay at Uttarkashi on Sunday and next day after collecting the permission you will proceed to Gangotri and stay over night.
You do not need any guide on this route. If you have any woman with you then a guide cum porter will be needed. The rate Rs.500 per day. You should contact with a guide cum porter after reaching Gangotri not in advance.
