Thumbs up Gomukh permssn.

Hi All,
This is the soft copy of the permission to go beyond Gangotri (up to Gomukh), issued by DFO, Uttarkashi.

Please read the rules at the bottom of the page. As soon as the Tapovan permit will be received – I’ll post here.

Hi,

Last year I went Gaumukh in oct(2007) , at that time (Oct 3rd) they stopped all peoples at Gangotri but later allowed to go up to Gaumukh (it really wasted our 2-3 hrs) but very strictly adviced us not to go beyond (to tapovan and beyond).

I did not find any strong reason behind this but when asked them (forest dept officials)they replied that there are several casualities this year thats why !!! and told us that going beyond tapovan will be up to us but they insisted that not go there and sadly I obeyed them.

Even when I felt that I have to go upto tapovan (when I was at Gaumukh) then guide refused to do so .

AND yes - Registration is now compulsary and only can be get done at uttarkashi.

I am not aganist it but deposit such amount of money is stupidity.
15 long trips !!!

The first time I saw the Gangotri glacier was way back in 1991 and then in 2005. There was plenty of difference that is someting I will say. I am a trekker myself bur there is too much traffic on the Gomuk route and beyond, because of the proximity to the peaks.

HR,
To be clear, no deposits are required for obtaining the permits; the first few posts are last year's info when the details were unclear. Now one only pays the Forest Dept.'s fees and that's it.
Certainly for Gaumukh. It's unclear whether the 2nd permit required for Tapovan also has to be paid for (probably yes). Hope Somnath can enlighten us after his return.

Allow me to post the link where I was trying to share my experience regarding this permission:

Once again I'm telling that permission can be collected only from DM, DFO office, Uttarkashi. And the officers at the gate 2km away from Gangotri, only registers your name & address and your guides/porters name and will give you a slip as a entry pass. Entry pass and entry permission are different and to be collected from these different places. For better convenience you try to collect any contact number of the Uttarkashi DFO office and call them to settle these permission matter before starting your journey.
