IMF permission not required to climb peaks for Indian citizens.

IMF rules-

6) Qualification for Leaders and Deputy Leaders

a) Advance Mountaineering Course with "A" grading from a recognised Mountaineering Institute; and

b) Participation in or at least two well-organised expeditions to peaks of above 6,500 metres, with climbs to a height of at least 6000 metres.

7) Qualification for members:

a) Minimum Basic Mountaineering Course for the participant from a recognised Mountaineering Institute, but 1/3rd members of the expedition should have done advance Mountaineering Course.

b) 25% of the participants should have done at least once well-organised expedition to a peak of and above 6000 metres.

Has anyone ever questioned why IMF permission is required to climb a peak. I know of so many mountaineers who dont bother to inform IMF that they are attempting a peak. They have gone, climbed and come back and legally nobody can stop them from doing it.

IMF was formed basically to help regulate the field of mountaineering especially for foreigners. They are no better than any Indian govt office. And I dont see them doing anything good for the field of mountaineering.

Any Indian citizen can go and climb a peak without IMF permission unless it comes in the inner line area where you have to take a permit from the local magistrate to travel in the area. Here too you are taking IMF permission so that you can prove to the local magistrate why you are in the area. Else that too would not be required.

The other main reason why people take IMF permission is to take paid leave from office when they are on the expedition.

Hey
was wondering if you guys could answer a couple of queries:
First of all, what are the dates for the BMC at NIM this year?Where can i find out?

Is there any course at NIM that will allow my 15 yr old younger sister n I to go together?(my parents are a wee bit paranoid ...)

Also which out of the Sar Pass, Saurkundi Pass n Kedarkanta treks do u think is the best n would reccomend?

Is the WHMI in Manali any good?

Ladies BMC Dates are 27/May/2008 to 23/Jun/2008 .
As NIM hostel can accommodate only limited no. of trainees same time - there is no simultaneous course (Adventure Course) while BMC/AMC/S&R courses going on .
e.g. if you plan to go for ladies B.M.C. course beginning from 27 May then adventure course for girls (14-18 years) will commence only after you depart for glacier training i.e. you will depart from NIM Uttarkashi for glacier training on 4th of June & reporting for Girls Adventure course is on 5th June 2008 similarly when you get back from glacier training to NIM - adventure course will be over by that time (19th June morning) & you will return to NIM on 19th afternoon or so.
So it's not possible for you & your younger sister to go together (unless she willing to spend 8 days in some hotel at Uttarkashi).
All YHAI treks you have mentioned are good ...which one to go for depends on what you looking for in the trek - Snow/Greenery/Scenic routes etc. etc. Generally Sarpass is favorite among trekkers for its height & snow , it is also considered as one of the toughest trek conducted by YHAI .

Personally I think WHMI Manali is no good if you are considering mountaineering seriously - doing basic course from there is much more easier, it will be a kinda fun trek .But if you are serious about technical climbing & want to learn it in detail consider NIM Uttarkashi & HMI Darjeeling only. Ranking wise:
1) NIM Uttarkashi
2) HMI Darjeeling
3) WHMI Manali
HMI Darjeeling is the oldest one & it is much better than WHMI Manali.

There's only one ladies batch per year for Basic mountaineering & Advance Mountaineering course....for adventure course (age 14-18) there are two batches for girls each year (5 June & 4 Dec. this year) ...however there's also a mixed batch (Age 21-40) of adventure course (27 Oct. 2008)

The fitter you are the more you will enjoy your course. Physically Basic will be a test of your stamin and your strength so while training you will have to concnetrate on both as you have to prepare yourself for 20 days of physical rigor.

You should be able to run around 7-8km @4.5 minutes a km. thrice a week and the other two days you can climb stairs with a 15kg. bag for around an hour. To my knowledge they allow you to give some of your stuff to the porters to carry in the Womens course. For strength training you should do some pull-ups, push-ups, squats or some light gym exercises.
