Hey Rahul, thanks for that suggestion. I will most probably do that.

Avid, the problem is (and i say this with a glum face) that i am going to the south of india on may 1 and coming back on the 17th. so you see, i had thought of going for two treks myself, but since YHAI now takes treks only in may and not june (like last year or so), i think i can only go for one. you say 25th april...i dont think YHAI takes treks in april, coz their brochure says one can report at the base camp from may 1 to 31. however, i think i'll call YHAI and confirm. if they do take treks in june as well, i think i'd be a lucky one. as for NIM, i think i will not take it up this year. you see, i have a back problem... i mean, my back muscles are weak and therefore i need to make them stronger first. and that's about that. and if you do take up the camp leadership, do let me know...maybe i'll see you on one of those camps!
take care

Kiksa yankar starts on 25th April as per their web page. From 17th May try the Har ki Doon trek. They take you up by a slightly different route, so its more fun.

The rarely trekked area is Sainj nala, Tirthan nala & Jiva nala. (south of Parvati river valley off Manikaran. If it happens, i am supposed to be on the instructor team to lead a bunch of kids to the area. Problem is the organizers have not booked the train tickets from Mumbai to Delhi.... and i don't know any other way to transport them via the land route in the blistering May heat.

If you happen to be free in Aug / Sept, keep in touch... am going for a good trek

Hi Avid
I checked up with YHAI, they have MAlana Kiksa starting from april 25th, but as it is, i'll be going for this one on around may 22. YHAI also takes treks in december, though i have no clue of what kind they mean in Mussoorie and Dalhousie. Panchmani sounds like a good trek but i dont know how it'll be.
i dont know how to go for other treks, apart from those YHAI takes. i mean, i know there are trekking clubs, etc, but you see, i want to take up trekking as a very serious business and i dont know what other resources are available for me to go for treks, especially since there's no one around me (so as to have a group or something) with whom i can go. JP above talks of a guide...how can one get in touch with guides and arrange for treks. could you plz help me with that? also, could you tell me about trekking clubs? i am trying to get in touch with one called Climbers and Explorers.
I want to go to Pindari in June sometime, and i dont know how to go about it. i would need a guide or a group right? i have none. what do i do?
thanks

If you are prepared for a bit of rain and maybe heavy rain (lasts 40 to 50 mins max) then Pindari in June is NO PROBs at all. It is a "tea house" trek so you don't need to carry food and tent.

What are the dates you wish to trek.... then maybe some beautiful route can be suggested keeping in mind your likes/limitations etc.

Hey Avid! The plan for now is that i'll be going for Sar Pass with YHAI. I cant do Malana K Y coz some work has come up that does not let me leave Delhi before the 28th or 29th of May. I come back around the 10th of june from there, so the dates around which i'll leave are somewhere around 15th or 20th of June. Also, i got to know that july end - september is a good time to go for Pindari coz the rains would have stopped. another problem that i've been repeatedly talking about is the fact that i have no one to go with!! god only knows how everything will work out. i mean, i could go in september.... well, i am just trying to plan right now. dodital is another trek on my list that i'd like to do this year. also, do you know anything about the kind of treks YHAI takes in december? they seem pretty lame to me.
anyways, that's that!!!

If you have done treks before, YES; YHAI Dec treks are not all that thrilling. Just a three day walk in the winter.

Because YHAI caters to the mass public and the mass vacations. Which is why YHAI treks are never arranged in the BEST trekking season namely: Aug Sep Oct. YHAI depends on a lot of volunteer Camp Leaders which is why they have programs only in the summer and Christmas holidays.

Pindari is trekkable from April to mid-November and a pleasant trek. The temporary dhabas are set up from mid-April to mid-October so you don't have to carry food. You can combine Pindari with Sunderdunga and Kafni in the same region for a longer holiday in the mountains. If you want to steer clear of the rain, then avoid July August. Again there is no guarantee that Sept. will be rain free. Last year it rained very heavily in Kumaon around 10th to 14th Sept. and transport was disrupted for nearly a week. One cannot predict these things. Roop Kund in the same region is an excellent trek... but no eating houses at some places and guides may be required for the final two days to Roop Kund... its a pre-organized trek. Another "tea house" trek in Kumaon is the Pilgrim route to Kailash Maanasarovar upto the Indian Border. (or maybe one day before you reach the border at Lipu Lekh Pass) You get eating places all along the route every day.

Yes, by all and every means.... carry at least two barsaatis. One to put over your head and the other to spread on the ground when you want to sit down. Barring the rain.... Pindari is a nice trek... but then it may not rain very much. Only drawback.... its over popular. Too many people are doing it. [too many to my perception, but still lesser than the hordes that go trekking in the Alps]
