You can not apply online. Write to:
Principal NIM Uttarkashi - 249193 they will send you a form to fill up....and also give you a letter that lists the courses available. For girls, it is usually may end. There are several courses - i guess you want Basic mountaineering. The adventure course is lot of fun and learning. good luck! |

Dear Nidhi,
Felt good to learn that you are very much interested to complete the Basic Mountaineering Course from NIM, Uttarkashi. I have completed the BMC from this institute recently and I recommend this course for highly motivated adventurers like yourself. The institute has most experienced instructors and training team. The main focus is on technical skills. You can try the website of the institute: www.nimindia.org You are most welcome if you want more information on any of your quarries. Rahul |

Hey Rahul
Hey Rahul
Thanks for replying, one. two, since you have done this course..i'd like to ask you...i was rethinking about the same and was wondering if i should first go for a trek to Milana Glacier with Youth Hostel association of India. What do you recommend...should i take up NIM first or YHA? thanks |

I did the YHAI Har Ki doon trek in May / June 2002 because my regular trek team dropped out last moment with me stranded. Having no companions to trek with, I opted for the YHAI trek where I landed up without booking. (registered on arrival...) It was a blast and I enjoyed myself thoroughly. The NIM Basic course is a slog-fest by comparison. If you have not done even ONE trek in your life, better do YHAI first. If my info is not wrong... there is no Milam glacier trek by YHAI. There are three: 1. Har ki doon.... (start at Mussoorie) 2. Sar Pass.... (start Kulu valley) & 3. Kiksa Yankar Pass ..(start Kulu valley) I found the web page for you.... yes , no Milam trek in YHAI schedule. http://www.yhaindia.org/Transaction/...amDetails.aspx Happy trekking, Happy mountaineering, don't bother if people call you crazy.

Hey everyone
I understand there are institutes similar to the Nehru institute of Mountaineering- Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling, and Western Himalayan Institute in Manali. I am interested in going for the basic mountaineering course that is for approximately 30 days. Which one offers the best training program, and has the best instructors? Thanks for your feedback. Comparing Institutes Of Mountaineering
I did MOI ( Method of Instruction ) from WHMI-Manali. Why I choose Manali was due to one major factor...
1. I am a Indian and a teacher son-I respect my teacher but I do not like to be abused and treated like a army recruit. Sorry to say-HMI Darjeeling has reputation of this. This does not mean that I hold it below par-rather HMI is most tough institute to cope with and thier training is also rated as No: 1 unless NIM comes up with some fantstic growth in few years. Course is same but method is different and attitute is different. WHMI is soft on students-they do not insult or 'screw' too much... NIM is strict but managable by those who are fit and can take the challenge and I think as WHMI has become private now-it is money making machine now. You better opt for NIM. Avid is correct-listen to him. You have to have some'feel' of mountain before you decided to climb it ! |

Dear Nidhi,
First of all you should tell me that what Himalayan trekking experience you have? How you got motivated for doing BMC? What is your age and physical fitness level? If you answer these questions you can have my advice for HOW to go about it!! I disagree with HIMADVENTURERS. I have had first hand experience with NIM instructors and training team. Hey, they are the best. I agree that since this is an Indian Army Institute and so It is expected of you to show high level of discipline .. but I personally think Mountaineering is not walk in the park.... You and your team mates life depends on the decipline you follow. That is what I have learnt all my life and even in this course. The instructors are young and highly motivated. Many have summited Everest recently. Moreover, they drive you towards being a better person, an excellent mountaineer and there is nothing wrong in it. I gurantee you will be an alltogather different person once you come back from the course. Waiting for your reply, Rohit. |

NIM & others in india
hello everyone... i'm back...with a lot of information. all this information is actually available at (IMF) Indian Institute of Mountaineering, Anand Niketan, Chanakya puri, New Delhi. Now first the most sought for: NIM...There are five slots for the basic course to begin..for 'gents' and 'ladies' separately. the age limit is 17-35 years. the brochure and the forms are available at IMF. in person or by post. the fee is Rs 4000 for indians. fax: 0091-1374-223344; email:india_nim@rediffmail.com ;telephone. 222123, 224663
then comes the second: Himalayan Mountaineering Institute at Darjeeling. six courses for basic...men& women togather but also one separately for women. Rs 4000/-. forms available at IMF, or HMI. telephone 91-354-2254087,2254299,2254268; fax: 91-354-2253760;email: slg_hmi@sancharnet.in, hmi_darj@rediffmail.com; website: www.exploredarjeeling.com/hmidarj/html there's another institute at Manali, Himachal Pradesh..five time slots for basic courses..men and women separately. Rs 3600/-. 17 years onwards. telephone: 91-1902-252342, 252206, 253789; fax: 91-1902-252137; email:dmas_manali@yahoo.com; website: himachal.nic.in/dmas forms for all are available at IMF, or the institute itself. ok, there's another option for those interested in trekking...i see it as gearing up for the courses...Youth Hostel association of India (YHAI), also takes treks..easy as well as difficult..for a nominal sum. YHAi, 5, Nyaya Marg, ChanakyaPuri, New delhi. brochures and forms are available. so that's it...i myself am planning to go for YHAI treks this year and NIM or HMI next year. all the best to everyone. |

Dear Nidhi,
I would suggest SAR Pass for you. It will be your dream adventure, I guarantee that!! But do enroll for the same quickly and if possible in the first five batches. Rahul. |

1. Do Kiksa yankar from 25th April to 5th May, reach Sankri by 6th or 7th May. 2. Do Har ki Doon trek from 8th May to 22nd June. If I had that much keave, I would surely do it. If these two don't leave you breathless, then apply for the NIM Basic course for the next year. YHAI has called me to be Camp Leader for 21 days at one of their high camps .... i haven't accepted yet because i am planning to go to a rarely trekked area. |
