Cool Illegal entry into Nanda devi Sanctuary

Harish Kapadia was part of a semi-official Govt sponsored trek inside the nanda devi biosphere reserve. I saw his slides taken in 2001. The Uttaraanchal govt wants to open up this route to high payment trekkers as this relatively new state has tourism as one of the only big money earners. The state has already suggested this 'conducted tour' but the central Govt is sitting on the file for the last three years... which is another way of saying 'no' in India. Some people have entered this place illegally by bribing local officials.

Merchant I don’t carry any side arms anymore; there might be couple of pea shooting Darringers in the cupboard somewhere. Hope that helps and heartiest thanks for the contribution offer by many IMers, for a moment I thought we might have to petition Green Peace, given the scale of operations

Trekker, Indian Govt have no parallel when it comes to sleeping over things rather then managing them, they firmly believe in the dictum that all protests die down, eventually.

In all seriousness, it is a crying shame that possible one of the most beautiful spots on Earth is off-limits....

So the USA, once again, is the culprit responsible for the Nanda Devi sanctuary being closed. That makes a lot of sense. Of course, that business about protecting bio-diversity is just a smoke screen. The real reason could be that a UFO crashed there just like in New Mexico. They want to stop the truth from coming out.

Or perhaps a clandestine factory making cheap sweaters burned down with great loss of life. Maybe the Clean Clothes Campaign should investigate. I look forward to reading all about it in the News and Commentary section.

I sincerely think it is possible that a well determined team of young motivated mountaineers with proper equipment/ hardware can infiltrate into the nanda devi biosphere reserve to check out what exactly has taken place there. Any one interested? Let me know?

Lightbulb Traill's Pass

My friend did go the very very hard way in 1994(?) crossing Traill's Pass (19000 feet plus) and saw nothing but beautiful granite mountain with ice. He had to come back the same way else he would have been arrested. As it is he barely made it out. Its not as if you are going to make some Earth shattering discoveries......

Dear Avid,

I would really like to meet your friend. He deserves our best compliments for keeping the sprit of adventure alive. He is truly free spirit in my opinion. Crossing trails above 19,000 feet is not a child’s play and I can really feel what he must felt when he saw those beautiful granite slabs covered with pure white ice. He took the risks involved but in return he was blessed with the most beautiful views, the creations of mother nature itself which only a few people ever see in their lives.

He is truly a Hero in my eyes. It is not important whether he made some earth shattering discoveries or not … but the more important thing is, at least he had a dream, a vision, and he followed his dream and I think we all trekkers and mountaineers are in search of this very thing. This is the only thing which sooths our souls… gives us eternal satisfaction….that we did what we felt was right…we followed our dream, whether we succeeded or not does not matter … the important thing is : WE TRIED!!.

Hope you understand.

GOD bless you,

Rahul.

Talking I will ask him.....

if he has the inclination to meet you. In fact he is supposed to go back to the place to tie a small bell at the Nanda Devi temple as his Nanda Devi "mannat" got fulfilled. People get older and a bit lazier. He actually made it upto South Col in 2001. Send me a PM. I'll try to set up a meeting... no promises whether i can deliver.... it depends on his mood.

Hi Avid I am back from The HKD trek and it was truly fantastic. Due to heavy snow fall last season there were massive snow fields all along the route and being the pioneer group we had to open a route through it. An ice axe was really helpfull on some of the pitches.
