Trekking INTO Nanda Devi Sanctuary

Hello to ALL of you,
Its time to go back trekking in India.
Last year was in Ladakh. We did the Lamayuru-Chilling trek. INCREDIBLE!!!
This year we plan the following trek, which suposedly goes into the sanctuary:
Day1: Joshimath to Lata
Day2: Lata to Lata Kharak
Day 3: Lata Kharak to Dharanasi Pass
Day 4: Dharanasi Pass to Debrugheta (within the NDS)and back to Dharanasi Pass
Day 5: Dharanasi Pass to Hitoli
Day 6: Hitoli to Joshimath

1.I'd appreciate any feedback on this trek from anyone who did it.
2. Can anyone recommend a GOOD and WELL KEPT trekking company out of Rishikesh that could do this with us. (We tried Red Chilli but they ar fully booked)

Please note:

1. A permit is required.

2. Be clear with agency that you will not pay any extra amount for levies or entry fees in various villages-this has been reported by our guides that various villages extract money from trekking teams in name of VILLAGE DEVELOPMENT FUND.
Quote SHOULD BE INCLUSIVE OF ALL LEVIES AND TAXES.

Greetings from Rishikesh !!

Greetings from Rishikesh Shuki !!

Himadventures, You forgot to mention the most important fact . For doing Nanda Devi Trek you have to be in a group of minimimum of 4 pax .

As far as entry fee is concerned only the Forest department is charging it one time . The ForestDepartment spends this money diffrent village developement projects. They are not charged by any village people and remember charged only once .

There are some other treks in the area which you could do if you are less than 4 person.

permits

hi
I was in Nandadevi outer sanctuary in May this year,2005. Yes, you have to take permits from District Forest Officer( DFO), Joshimath

There is NO rule that says that there should be 4 in a group. I along with my guide went to Lata Kharak and towards Dharansi pass. At that time there was a heavy snow fall and we had to come back. Upto Dibrughetta, you are allowed to trek and given permits.

Thanks everyone- Yes we all are saying the same thing....about rules and regulations.
Police says something else,SDM office says somehting else and local people says....MONEY !

Raj..good that you came back from LATA-We paid good amount of money because there were foreigners in the team.

But this was such a negative show by civil authorities that they donot wish to listen...or file a report. They were just TRYING TO MAKE guide understand that if some money changes hands....whats wrong in this...this is only development of these people...and bla bla...

You know why? I came to know about this...and inquiried from my own sources....THIS IS ALL VOTE GAME INFACT....no SDM or DM wants cross head with VILLAGE HEAD having backsupport by serving govt. MLA.

rest you know....

I have not done Nanda Devi inner sanctuary but I did Kuari Pass trek in the same region. We used Grand Adventures (grandadventures@vsnl.net) phone number in Delhi 91-11-45284857. Their Joshimath number is 91-1389-221991. We found their guide Sohan Singh Bisht (Sonu) an excellent person. Your friends will need government permission to trek but the tour operators arrange it easily.

Nanda Devi sanctuary is a heavily restricted region for trekkers. GMVN a travel company owned by the state government is the only company authorized to take trekking groups inside the sanctuary, and that too in limited numbers. Check www.gmvnl.com for details, and book early.
