Nanda Devi East in 1 Month (April 08)
Hello
I'm thinking of visiting Nanda Devi at short notice, with the following route, with tents and porters and knowledgeable guide: Munsiari - Lilam - Bodgwar - Rialkot - Martoli - Nanda Devi East Base camp - Pachu - Pachu Glacier camp - Rialkot - Bodgwar - Lilam - Munsiari I've been trekking in India and Nepal in various times of the year in adverse conditions, but do not know Garwhal at all. So I'm glad if anyone can help me. #1: how much snow is there in April (espcially how was last winter), really really too much snow? #2: Plants and animals in April? (please list only what's realistic to be seen, so no list with snowleopard please #3: way back and forth is the same. will the way back be a boring repetition of the way up, or is it interesting enough? #4: any additional information (daytrips, other secret hints) Thank you very much, Carsten www.myhimalayas.com |

Hello there, the trip is good I had done in mid May, there was no snow then but at the time you are going chances are there will be snow specially at the Base camp at Pachu. If you do not want to come back back the same route cross the river Gouri Ganga if possible via the Milam Glacier on top of the snout of the river or at Burfu where there is bridge , there is track on both sides of it, go to Milam and start down. From Tola one can go up the Brigeganga Pass there will be snow there when I crossed it in end May there was still snow though melting, Go down to Ralam Village and then come to Munsiyari, you can cross the Gouri Ganga near Lilam also. Permission is required to go to Milam from Munsiyari. If you have not booked a guide then I would recomend " GOKARN " he is from Munsiyari and has a house at Milam also. |

Thanks very much for the information and the route alternatives. I decided not to go this April, it really seems like May is a better month so I know how to plan for next year. Again, thank you very much, I'll get back to you once I'm really sure of going.

I will give you the route you can plan accordingly. Starting point is Munsiyari reachable from Dehradun, Khatgodam, not in one day from Dehradun I am not aware from Khatgodam, its more than 300 Km either way. 1. Munsiyari to Lilam or a little beyond if you can rough it out. 2. Lilam to Bugdiyar or beyond 3. Bugdiyar to Rilkote or beyond 4. Rilkote to Martoli. (5KM) viewing of Nanadadevi and Nanda Devi East. (Or go up to Ganghar the next day proceed to Pachu Glacier and to the NanadaDevi Base camp best viewing from here.) From Martoli also you have to go further, I am not aware of the route from Martoli. |
