GPRS and cellphone coverage at the north

Hi,

Is there any GPRS coverage in northern india? New Delhi for example. If yes then where, and what are the prices.

I thought of taking gprs mobile phone so that i'd be able to send and receive e-mails while on the road, and even be on icq.

Hope someone has information on that topic.

Thanks in advance

Hi Delhi is on GPRS,other small citis dont know.
Prices wont be much,Hutch(heheh dont about others) charge Rs 99 Rs per month.
If you going to get Indian phone(service provider),they took 72 hrs to activate first time.

I'm not sure how much help this will be but I got a Samsung SGH-s300. It has tri-band reception. I arranged to be able to use it internationally while I was still in the UK. In Sri Lanka (often a signal faff!) it was BRILLIANT!! It would switch between providers according to who had the best signal AND when I got home the charges were also very very good - even better than in the UK, I wish I'd used it more now! The only annoying thing was getting the little 'Welcome to ....@ texts every time it switched providers!

Dayglowhamster : wouldn't it be cheaper to sign with local provider? Preferable prepaid?

And what about GPRS? It'd be nice to e-mail from your room

If you intend to use a sim card from Finland then contact your service provider as they can tell you who they have roaming agreements with.

From experience I have found it easier and cheaper to replace my UK sim card with Indian sim cards whenevr I travel in India. You do not have to mess about with complex roaming codes some networks use and it is lighter on the pocket.

Shere,

I don't understand! If there is any network of GSM 1800 my phone and my SIM card will find it and use it automatically! I don't have to do anything!
The question is: Is there any GSM networks in India, and if yes, where are those?

Dual band phones are used in India. As for coverage you better ask your service provider as they will have network agreements with indian cell phone operators.

From experience most towns, cities and even villages in northern india are covered. But again this does not mean your gsm phone will work there. It all depends on the roaming agreements your gsm phone service provider has with indian companies.

Sindy, India has a wide GSM network but it depends on which service you use because all cell phone service in India is private. Get an Indian sim card from Hutch or Airtel with all India roaming - its pretty decent coverage.

network coverage

Lost, I am lost!
next time I will be in India I will mostly stay in Himachal.
But I have to go for a few days to Penjab, Delhi, UP, Bihar and Karnataka.
If I buy a Hutch or Airtel prepaid phonecard, can I make calls from all these places or is it ONLY possible to receive calls?
Thank you and sorry for my English. I'm not sure I would make it better in French!

Northern India communication

Anyone know of cellular reception in the Spiti and Ladakh regions? Also, how prevalent is internet in these regions?
Cheers
