Milam/Shalang Gad: May 18th - 25th, 2007

On the 18th, I started to walk down the mountain from Selapani to the Gori Ganga. My plan was to trek to the Nanda Devi Base Camp, but, two days later, I found myself below Lwan village staring at a very risky looking bridge leading the way to Patta and Naspanpatti. With our heavy packs, my guide (Gokarn Ram) and I tried to cross, but we both sensed that there was only one way this could end. So we had to abandon this route and, instead, chose to follow the Shalang river to its source. This meant walking down the shalang gad for two days and ending up in Malla Shalang (upper Shalang) at around 4300 meters. the views were mindblowing and it was well worth the hard work that we put in. The route (well there really wasn't one) included crossing 5 frozen streams at inclines of about 60 degress, where we were hacking our steps with an axe. Very exciting stuff. I do have a request as well. Has anybody done Bara Banghal recently? I plan to head up in a week or so. How has the weather been this year? Can it be done say around mid June?? Any details would be appreciated.

The photos are really good. It seems you had overcast sky on most of the day. As for BB trek it may be better to go after 20th, this was the info I had got as I also plan to do it sometime in near future. Horses move on this trailVSK and the Horseman at Manali will be of help. Hope to hear in detail about this trek.
