Milam Glacier Trek - Inputs welcome !
Hi all ,
I am slated to do the Milam Glacier trek starting 11th May . There has recently been some news of bad weather in the higher reaches . I have these questions : a. What sort of weather can I generally expect from 11th-20th ? b. There is a guy telling me that the PWD hasn't cleared the path all the way to Milam as yet . Does the path need to be cleared every year ? c. Is it too early in the season to be doing this trek ? d. Are there going to be any 'dhabas' along the way ? Or do we need to carry ration and a cook with us ? e. Is there any place where we can find snow ? lots of it ? I have trekked before in the Himalayas , but I am having a couple of rookies with me this time..please come forth with whatever info you all guys can on this.. Always do a search. You will get almost anything.
Check out the report by Jeroen. It is complete. The Milam glacier teahouse trek - the details I was there in December and I can tell you, it would take a quiet bit of work to clear the road. I really doubt you will get the permit. If you get the permit then it means everything is in order and you don't need to worry. |

The trekfrom Munsyari to Milam Glacier is 54 km. "HERE IS A SOME INFO I AM READING FROM A TRAVEL BROCHURE I GOT WHEN I WAS THERE!"
The base for Milam is Munsyari (2290m). Not only does a trek to Milam entail obtaining a permit but the arrangements for hiring porters/mules and buying provisions have to be made by trekkers themselves. And Munsyari is the ideal place for it. Depart early for the village of Darkote (2 km.). Proceed further down the valley of Gori Ganga, the river which originate's from Milam glacier. Call a halt for the night at Lilam village. The second day's leg involves a gradual climb up to Bugdiar (2450 m) on the bank of Gori Ganga. Walk next day along the course of Gori Ganga to conclude at Rilkote (3200 m). The gradual ascending track from Rilkote to Milam village (3434 m) allows one to relax. On the final day, depart early for the glacier and return to the village for lunch and night stay.Accomodation is available at every stop enroute to Milam. I did the Pindari glacier trek in mid April ,1998 and it was not possible to reach the glacier as it was still snowbound. A guy from England I met had crampons and icepick, but he turned around because he said it was too dangerous. And Pindari is 400 meters lower than Milam. So I don't think you can make it all the way there at that time of year! Here's a good site for the info you will need though www.kmvn.org |

Appreciate the skiing link, here's some links that say mid April is the best time of year for Milam, since you want to go early, my guess is that it depends on that particular spring
Milam Glacier Good luck |
