Tour Operators-A Bit Hard Work These Days...

Spend some time on internet and try to contact them directly at phone/emails ID's they provided.

Most websites are made by computer geeks-so you have to be bit 'on toes' to analyze about origionality of your operator.

Otherwise-lot of information is present on Indiamike-spend some time.
There are many good contributors SHIMLA,AvidTrekker are two names I remember...

Whist the tour companies suggested in post 3 may be good or may be bad, you should always be cautious when someone joins this website and posts this kind of first post.

There does seem something familiar with the typing though, we (moderators) will look into it.

Most trekking agents are glorified commission agents who arrange porters and cooks for you and deduct their commission before paying the porters. They are basically very good people... but they don't know what the foreigner will require from them. The professionals are mostly in Delhi and charge 40 to 50 USD per person per trekking day [group of min six ppl][min 12 days] Some new operators in Rishikesh are probably good but i don't have first hand experience, its a long time that i have had to use agents for anything at all.

Oh Yes, an English speaking guide who speaks it fairly well is a rarity. [AND expensive] Most say that they do speak English.... but you will not be able to comprehend any of it. [except 'yes', 'no' & 'which country you?']

What is your idea of a moderate high altitude trek? How many days?

Hi,
Avid is absolutely right there ... My Idea of moderate trekking in Kumaon and Garhwal is equivalent to what we Indians usually term as Yatra (Pilgrimage) and dont go by the pilgrimage ... these are hard treks not conventionally but in the way Indian Families approach them ... however later on that .... I would suggest the Har Ki Doon trek and Follow it up to Gangotri ... one of the best Independent Moderate High Altitude treks ... Get a Tent, Mattress, Sleeping bag and Go for it ... any Problem in Lifting your own weight get a porter on the way ..... AVID BELIEVE IT .... The Har Ki Doon Trek is Sold for INR 1200/- a Day in Delhi minus the transportation .... Did You do It your self ????? ........ Imagine someone sitting in Delhi who does not even know the feeling of standing at 3500mts telling you how it is up there in the mountains .... get your backpack and rush .....

Cheers,
Dhananjay

Did it by myself. Long long ago. Again with a little different route with YHAI in May/June 2003. Am aware of charges. A lone trekker [unable to form group] is charged 90 US dollars per day all inclusive.[for grp of six charge is 40 to 50 USD/day/head] They give you maharajah treatment. If i were earning 100,000 USD per annum [and a trekking fiend] i would not mind spending 2000 USD for my hobby. Its all relative. For them 2000 dollars is not a really big amount.... for us its a year's income.

Many firangs come to India so that they can spend a year at 400 rs a day which is ten dollars a day [roughly] amounting to 3650 USD in India..., plus airfare 1000 USD say max. amt. 5000 USD ..... which could be earned in a month in the US or Europe. I have met some spiritually inclined foreigners who actually live their life at Rs 100 a day in the Himalayas.

All this is relative. depends on your frame of reference and background.
