Well from Ukhimath to Madhmaheshwar and back 4 days. Best season is mid Sept - Oct but I would keep this a bit flexible as last year there were rains in Sept last week also.

Any other place in vicinity - means vicinity of Delhi or Madhmaheshwar??

If Madhmaheshwar is what you mean you can try Deoria Tal, Tungnath (at Chopta), Anusya (at Mandal) can be extended to Rudranath also

Well early June should be ok but not ideal. Coming from Mumbai I am used to trekking in rains - as that is when we do a lot of short treks in Shyadris - the issue with rains in Himlayas is with clouds you cannot see all the lovely peaks around. I would say if possible go after mid-sept.

Greetings,

We are planning a trek to Madhyamaheshwar starting 29th June. I have traversed the thread to know that
1. It takes 2 days to reach Madhyamaheshwar from Jugasu?
2. 2 days Back?
3. Jugasu is the last motarable point?
4. One day buffer is sufficient to mitigate the risk of rain?/Landslides?
PFB a tentative schedule. Any suggestion is welcome.

Day 1:- Kathgodam to Jugasu via Bhimtal
Day 2:- Jugasu to _______? Night halt
Day 3:- ______ to Madhyamaheshwar Night halt
Day 4:- Madhyamaheshwar to _________
Day 5:- ___________ to Jugasu? NIght Halt
Day 6:- Jugasu to Malari forward to Niti valley??? Camp
Day 7:- Stay put in Malari
Day 8:- Malari to Katgodham

Please Help!!

Why from Kathgodam?
The convenient rail head is Haridwar.
You can go to Madhmaheshwar via (1) Kalimath (motorable)-Ransi-Gaundar or (2) Mansuna (motorable)-Ransi-Gaundar. For route (1) you can start from Guptakashi. For route(2), you can start from Ukhimath. Both these starting points have GMVN TRH.

Hi Satyaa,
Sadanand is right. Why to travel from Kathgodam. Any specific reason for this route? Otherwise you should go from Mansuna.

I had been at Kalimath some two year back. Could not able to go from there to Madmaheswar. Obviously went there without any preparation. Could not find any porter or pony.

Sadanand, can you through some light on Kalimath Ransi route. How long it is from Kalimath?

I did Madhmaheshwar in Sept'92 from Mansuna. I trekked to Kalimath from Guptakashi in Oct'98 mainly to see Kalimath temple which is located on right bank of Madhmaheshwar Ganga. There is also a jeepable road from Guptakashi which reaches Kalimath on the opposite side of the river. The same road continues as the trekking path from Kalimath to Ransi which is about 8 kms. There was a plan to extend this road upto Ransi.

In olden days, pilgrims used to trek Madhmaheshwar via Kalimath. The old Garhwal maps will show the trekking route to Madhmaheshwar as Guptakashi-Kalimath-Ransi-Goundar-Madmaheshwar. It was only when the road from Ukhimath was extended upto Mansuna (may be now further extended)that trekkers preferred Mansuna route.

I am lucky to interacting with a person like you. I had been to Kalimath in the year 2005. Then we took jeep from Guptakashi. It took us 30 minutes to reach Kalimath. Since we had no communication earlier about our intention to go MM we just took a chance after reading a book, "Himalayer Pathe Pathe" by Kalidas Chakraborty - a Bengali writer. Unfortunately we could not make it due to non availability of Porter and Pony. The road which took us Kalimath extended further 6 km. But the river flowing in front of Kalimath was Saraswati, as told us by the locals and reaches Mandakini.

The river is Madhmaheshwar Ganga. Nest & Wings map also shows the river near Kalimath as Madhmaheshwar Ganga which meets Mandakini near Guptakashi.

Which maps are these, Sadaji? I don't suppose they are available anymore?

Correct. The only Saraswati I know of in the area is at Mana.

That was a trekking map of Garhwal printed on a broucher picked up from one of the GMVNs sometime in late 80s. I lost many such papers (and also the photo album of my first formal trek to Pindari in Oct'85) at the time of the house shifting in 2002 .
