i am 62 years of age. i am going to madmaheshwar on 20/05/2008 & 21/05/2008.i have six others with me almost of the same age. we are three males& four females. i shall reach ukhimath on 18th may & stay at bharat seva ashram till 19th may. we will have our vehicle with us. it will take us till kali math or where ever the trek starts from. please suggest as to where from we may get poney on hire and where will be best for night stay.

Hi Guys,
After a long time I am again with you all. Hope you are doing well. One unfortunate thing happened to me. We were on a small tour, post son’s annual examination at Vizag/ Arraku. My son was not well and had some stomach problem prior to our tour. He was fallen sick again at Vizag and developed Typhoid. Things worsen when we came back at Kolkata. He was hospitalized for quick recovery. He is now OK. My reason for writing is probably doctor will not permit me to go Madmaheswar this year. Can you please suggest some place – obviously Himalaya – post Puja for a week, preferably Garwal.

Sorry to hear this - when are you planning to go. How bad is his case and what are the preacuations he has been advised. Some more details will help - are all treks ruled out even shorter ones...

Hi,
I discussed Doctor only yesterday that if we could go during Durga Puja. His answer was yes, but with some precautions, especially with water. He said that he should take hot food and only mineral water. Trekking probably is not possible. Some good place where we can go by motor. Can we get good water and food at Uniana?

I guess Pooja is around 3-4 months away - a good time for your son to recover. In my younger days I had typhoid and I was fully recovered in 3 months. I am not sure how bad is your son's case but I think in 3-4 months he should be fully fit. As far as going to Madhmaheshwar is concerned - you can get hot food all along. As for water I dont remember seeing too bottled water being sold but the water from streams was good enough. For your son you have two options -
1. Carry some water purfication tablets or filters - many are avaiable in fact a search on Indiamike will give you some answers

2. Carry mineral water from Ukhimath - say 4 litres a day for 4 days which is 16 kgs of load - which is slightly less than what a porter would carry.

I would go with option 1 and not worry too much. Needless to say you should watch out how he recovers in the next few months and then decide.

Other option is to go to Chopta and do small treks to Deoria tal and Tungnath. Then move to Mandal and trek (5 kms) to Anusuya Devi and stay the night there.

I personally think you are giving up on Madhmaheshwar a bit too early, your son should be ok in the next 3 months or so.

Sorry to hear about ur son's illness. It's nice that he is okay nnw. How about visiting places like Munsiari, Srinagar etc during the puja?

Thank you for your suggestion. In fact I am also interested to go Madmaheswar this year if Doctor allows. He actually developed very bad type of Typhoid. So much so he was drug resistance to normal medicines. Zenocin the most effective drug for Typhoid was also not effective to him. This discovered after we did blood culture from Roy Tribedi. Hope you now understand the problem. Let's see.

Secondly, the route you suggested Deoriatal,Tungnath via Chopta, we did some three years back. You said "Then move to Mandal and trek (5 kms) to Anusuya Devi and stay the night there." Is this trek starts from Mandal or via Tungnath any route is available. I am really exited about this route. Please let me know. Thanks for your kind information and all concern for my son.

Oops the situation of your son seems to be much worse than I thought. I guess Madhmaheshwar can wait.

As for the trek to Anusuya - the route is from Mandal. In fact I did this when we climbed from Mandal to Rudranath. Till Anusuya the track is well laid and infact concerted in many places. I am not sure if you can reach Anusya directly from Tungnath - it may be possible but it would be very strenuous.

I am amazed. I did not see any GMVN rest house in Chopta
in May, 2007, Oct, 2007 Dec, 2007 and May, 2008. I thought the forest department people in Chopta do not allow anyone to construct hotels or guest houses any more. If you have seen the rest house, where is it?

How does one go to Nandi Kund from Madhyamaheshwar? How far is it from there? Is there a direct route from Nandi Kund to Rudranath? How is the Madhyamaheshwar-Pandushera stretch? Is it possible to reach the south base of Chaukhamba-IV from Madhyamashwar via Kanchni Tal.

Please help me. Do tell me anything you know about Nandi Kund, the source of Madhyamaheshwar Ganga.

See this thread.. it will give some details. I have been only till Budha Madh and then came back. I think Nandikund will be a days trek from madhmaheshwar but I may be wrong.

Vaibhav Kaul. Yes I have seen GMVN tourist lodge in the year 2004. It was just oposite to the entrance gate of Tungnath.

"Tungnath (3,680m or 2,065 ft) is the highest (in altitude) temple in India.

You get here by trekking from Chopta (7km, 4 hr), which is 37km from Ukhimath. "At Chopta there is a GMVN Tourist Bungalow that has rooms with attached baths."

Seen, but was it open and functioning?

It's true that there used to be a GMVN at Chopta. It was closed years ago and the one at Ukhimath opened instead. I have a feeling that page somnath linked to hasn't been updated in a long time (bottom of page has '2001' ?)
GMVN's own website doesn't show it either; it can't be booked.
