Couple of points

1. Were you able to speak to Mr Panwar
2. If not you can try the phone no of our porter - Narayan Rawat. He stays close to Kalimath and does Madhmaheswar 3-4 times a year. His no 09411355009
3. As for whether you can reach from Uniana to Madhmaheshwar in a day - the answer is typically no. It would be difficult and would not be enjoyable... but in your case you are planning to use a ponies in which case it may be possible, but I would still not advise it.

Dear Spicetrekker Saheb.
Would love to know your name.
No, I could not able to contact Mr. Panwar.
My question on whether reach in a day was - Ponny. Will obey your guidence and call Narayan Rawat , the porter on the given number and will let you know. Thanks for all information.

Yes. It's Umaprosad Mukherjee whose book inspired me and my family to go Himalaya every year. Thank you so much for your nice reply. Will love to have more.

On a Pony in a day is possible - but if you plan with two you can use one day for contingency which typically arises in form of landslides, bad weather etc

TO share my experience actually this year we had lost couple of days due to landslides and had to go to Rudranath after Madhmaheshwar. We reached Ukhimath late afternoon and then Uniana by early evening. To make up on lost time we trekked to Ransi from Uniana in the evening 3 kms or so and then next day trekked from Ransi to Madhmaheshwar - believe me it was quite tiring but the positive side was we created one more day in our itinerary which was useful later in Rudranath as we encountered bad weather in Rudranath and lost 1 more day.

So plan two days for ascent and one day for descent and godforbid you lose sometime in your itinerary or you dont feel too tired and want to go on you always do it in one day. On the other hand if you plan for one day then you dont have any flexibility.

Actually we have plan to and fro from Ukhimath 5 days. Some time ponywala press for going fast. Hence I was thinking to reach there in a day and spent some time in between for another couple of days. I agree fully with you that it will be tiring. My wife and son may not take trouble of going in a day.

Spoke with Rakesh Rawat, Narayan's son. Narayan is not at home. He said by pony you can reach Madamaheswar from Uniana by 5 hours. It sounds a bit fishy. I repeatedly asked him and his reply was same. He said he also go to Madmaheswar. Now, I am really confused. Thank you so much for giving phone number.

As a rule dont go by what the guides say - it is not that they are lying but I have spoken to many people at Ransi who go to Madhmaheshwar and come back walking in the same day. The issue is their fitness levels are very different.

As for the Pony taking five hrs it is a bit aggressive. Lets work this out Ponies take 3-4hrs for 14 kms for Kedarnath. Let us say Uniana to Madhmaheshwar is around 18 kms, so thay should take 5-6 hrs plus add one 1-2 hrs more as this is a tougher climb. The issues is sitting on a pony for 6-8 hours is not easy -at least for me. I suggest get the pony and keep going till Gaundhar - if you feel good then proceed or else stay. BTW there are some basic places to stay beyond Gaundhar also.

Thanks for all your valuable suggestion. I will proceed upto Gaundhar only in day one. Can we reach next day? One of my friend said that Bantoli is the best place to stay. It is Sangam of two rivers. What is your suggestion? Is there any place where we can stay along with my family at Bantoli? Can you send me some of your photographs on this route?
Loving regards,

Hi Somnath
Umaprasad Mukherjee has also been a great source of inspiration to me and my husband...and can be a great inspiration for children to fall in love with the Himalayas once and for all..and it is a super thing that you guys are doing by trekking in the himalayas with your child.Treks are where one actually meets the mountains.
Now the details, Deepak or Deepu is the guy who drives a Mahindra Max..and who carried us to Uniana..and fixed the porters,Mahavir and Jitpal Singh, who were great guys and saw us carefully through the whole trek.Mr Ramesh Panwars' number you have already got, I will give you Deepu's number, that is 09412115702. Mahavir would also be traceable at the following number as he promised, that is (Jaspal Singh)09412109310.
If you want I could speak to Deepak once before you call him, once your plan is fixed.Let me know.
And I am called Rima and my husban Jit. If you speak to Deepak then you can tell him about us , four people from Mumbai who visited in the monsoons whom he dropped back to Rishikesh at the end of the trip.
Umaprasad Mukherjee generally trekked through a slightly different route through Guptkashi and then Kalimath and meet the path before Ransi.
cheers

Thank you so much Rima for your all information. I called a guy called Narayan Rawat, courtesy Spicetrekker. I will go Madamaheswar next year and receive information from friends like you. Thanks for everything.

One small story I would like to share with you. I read a book in Bengali called "Rahashamayee Roopkund" by Birendranath Sarkar. He went to mysterious lake some 1965. Then he used to gather information from Swami Pranabananda Maharaj, who used to stay at Wan. He, based on a map went to the lake along with his solo friend and reached there. They trekked from Gwaldam. I had been there with my family once in 1998 and trekked upto Debol.

And now, we can even see the photograph of the lake by switching on our monitor through internet. It's amazing. We can mail each other and exchange so much of information. Long live information technology. Please keep on posting.
Regards,

as per my experinece (of oct2005) go i am listing a few points...
1. no pre arrangement guide porter required, u will get them in ukhimath
2. food and shelter available all the way
3. we rested for first night at bantoli...place is nice but considering somnath is going with family, if all members are not that tough, it would be better to break the journey as...uniana to ransi, ransi to bantoli and bantoli to madmaheswar.
4. from a bridge between gaundar & bantoli road is steep up til a few km below of madmaheshwar. so make the first tow days a bit easy, adust to trekking and then on the final day make a 9km haul o reach madmaheswar.
5. there is a place called khatara, 4km up from bantoli. when we went we had lunch there. try to get info about the palce. if night halting is possible there, it can devide the 24km better.

Beautifully depicted story on Madhya Maheswar in your attached site.
You said in your story that you went upto Jogasu by zeep. But I came to know that zeep now ply upto Uniana.
We will try to get pony. If it is available, can't we take first day break at Bantoli? Because few of my fried in this thread has suggested not to try this trip in a day. Your view?

Loving regards,

Great to see so many people being admirers of Shri Umaprasad Mukhopadhyay. There is one interesting observation I made in Ransi in 2005.In front of a small house (maybe hotel) it was written in Bengali " Ekhane Umaprasad Mukhopadhyay theke gechilen". It was really interesting to read that but couldn't verify the claim due to lack of time.

Bantoli is a lovely place and there is one small lodge there too.If you want you can stay there.Since jeeps are plying upto Uniana, it will be easier for you to reach Bantoli.

“direct train from Abu Road to Jaisalmer”
Sorry, I do not have any firsthand info. I can ask my friend who is in Rajasthan now, may be he can help. Or, a post in Rajasthan forum will do.

Madmaheswar – next year. Well, Panch Kedar is an attraction but I am not sure about next year. To be very honest, Gomukh & Tapovan is #1 in my list. If everything goes well……

Babuchand is rite (as always…), extra 1 or 2 day become very handy for a family trek.

What is the title of this book, and is it available in English?
Thanks in advance.
