Pin parvati and bhawa pass iterinary

Here is my final iterinary. Please feel free to add any comments or suggestions on the iterinary.

1st September (Friday): Meet in Delhi in Afternoon and take bus for Bhunter(500 kms, 13 hrs) Drive from New Delhi to Bhunter by luxury coach. We should preferable take a proper volvo bus becoz we are immediately
starting the trek. Spend the night at a hotel in Bhunter for few hours.

2nd Sep:Bhunter - manikaran - barsheni(by bus) - Khirganga(trek)
We should expect our porters and guides to meet us in Barsheni.
Barsheni -Khir Ganga (4 -5 hrs) (Open ground)The trek through the forest to Khir Ganga (2920 Mts.) is a pleasant walk except for one short steep climb in
between. Khir Ganga is a Holy place with a hot water spring, small temple of Lord Shiva and a bathing tank. This is the last chance to take a hot water bath on the trek.

3rd Sep: Khir Ganga-TundaBhoj (4-5 hrs) The trail is still within the limit of pine trees and is heavily wooded on this section also. TundaBhoj (3400 Mts.) is the upper limit for the pine forests! and now on there is an abundance of Bhoj ( Birch) trees. Camp in a green meadow. Pass through beautiful grazing grounds of Mandror and Nihara on the way.

4th Sep: TundaBhoj- Thakur Kuan (4-5 hrs) This is the first challenging day on the trek. The ground is rocky for around 2 kms and have a somewhat tricky and risky slab to cross.
The trail is steep and hard in some sections close to Thakur Kuan (3400 Mts.). This area falls within the Kanawer Wildlife Sanctuary and one may encounter small Himalayan Brown Bears at lower elevations and Wild Sheep or the Snow Leopard at higher altitudes. Towards south is a beautiful peak
Kullu Eiger (5664).

5th Sep: Thakur Kuan- Odi thach (5-6 hours)

6th Sep: Odi Thach -Mantalai Lake ( 6-7 hrs)Trek through flower speckled meadows to mysterious Mantalai Lake. There are some very unusual rock bridges on the way to Mantalai and there is an abundance of quartz and semi
precious! gems around here. Taking rock souvenirs from here is strongly discouraged.

7th Sep (Full Moon) : Mantalai Lake-Base Camp (6-7
hrs) The trekking is challenging, over a glacier and loose scree slopes.
There is a beautiful grassy camp (4500 Mts. approx.) at the base of the Pass.

8th Sep : An extra day. Acclimatisation/RESERVE/REST
Rest at the base of the Pin Parvati Pass and cross pass if the weather permits.

9th Sep: Base Camp-Pin Parvati Pass-Camp (5-6 hrs)
The approach to the Pass is over a crevassed snowfield and all precaution is necessary on this section. Everybody is roped up as the crevasses may not be easily visible. After the pass descend over a steep scree slope to reach the first camp site in the Pin Valley (4500 Mts.)

10th Sep: Camp to ChingPut Maidan. Cross the river and
reach base of bhaba pass.

11th Sep: Cross bhaba pass and camp at other side at Fushtirang.. this is the beautiful campsite as good as switzerland that was mentioned by Avid.

12 the Sep: Rest.. Chill out.. fart and relax.. We have been spending money, time and drilling out ourselves just for some beautiful location.

13th Sep: Trek to muling ( 5- 6 hours).. or to the roadhead at Kafnu (another 3 -4 hours).

14 sep: Kafnu - Sarahan : Take a jeep to Sarahan (85 kms. 3-4 hours) . Take a bus from Sarahan to Shimla same day (190 kms) or on the next day..

15th Sep (Friday): Reach Delhi.. those who want to stay back for a few days can rest at Sangla valley.

some suggstns

4th sep Tunda bhuj to Thakur Kuan. suggested change : TB to TauTi Thaach

Walk one hour ahead of Thakur Kuan to Tauti thaach. Its the most beaut camp site on the trek. My guide did not choose it coz of "no firewood'. I was quite cheezed off with him. Also TB to Thakur Kuan is the shortest walk of the trek. This will even out distances somewhat. Then we have....

5th sept Tauti Thaach to Odi thaach.

10th Sep: Camp to ChingPut Maidan. Cross the river and

How will you cross the river? You should know some magic. It is uncrossable by normal persons of normal means.

There is an extremely dangerous steel cable jhoolaa below Ching put maidan which could be used for crossing. But then there is ANOTHER river after 40 metres of the same ferocity. NO JHOOLAA HERE.

You will have to provide two more days to Mud and back on the opposite bank. NO GUIDE from Manikaran knows the Bhaba Pass route; even tho they might lie to you about it. [I stayed three days in Manikaran just discussing all this] You can take a guide from Mud. The final valley towards Bhaba pass definitely requires a guide; coz there are three valleys as options and one false pass at the top.

13th Sep: Trek to muling ( 5- 6 hours).. or to the roadhead at Kafnu (another 3 -4 hours).
Trek to Kafnu will be very very loooong from Fushtirang. Around nine to ten hours non stop at least. 12 hours if you break for lunch. Mulling is utterly beautiful. Stay there and enjoy the place.

Hi jyotipg,

did this trek in 1998. My suggestion is: Take the rest/acclimatisation day already in Mantalai (4000m). It's the better place! - Than you will be fit for base-camp and the pass... - The Full moon will be with you....

Hope the August Full moon will be also on my site for my new Kinnaur itinerary...

Best wishes
AndreasW

Jyoti
Sounds very tempting. This will be a beautiful trek for sure.
I've heard from a friend who did it that there is a small section where you'll have to do a traverse, rock-climbing style. You might have to take off your boots for better foot-holds. And looking down you get to see the wreckage of a chopper several hundreds of feet below.
Andreas/Avid might know more about this. Or is there a different trail now ?

btw: jyoti, on your yahoogroups page, where's that photo taken ? it shows some guys on a snow covered ridge. It's beautiful. Did you click this one ?
cheers

Thakur Kuan jhulaa

If the jhulaa before Thakur Kuan is down for some reason, this rock traverse will be there. Its not that bad. You have to be careful and the footholds are large enough for us not to remove our socks.

We took the jhulaa. So only plain walking. I would actually prefer the rock traverse, as usual my guide didn't tell me about it. One of the porters told me later... it happens...

Hi, I am interested and already planned to do this trek this year. Last year, I made a solo trek(with one guide and one porter) towards Toss Glacier--SaraUmga Pass--Chota Sigri Glacier--Batal and then my guide showed the route for PeenParvati Pass.

I want to know whether it is a conducted trekking tour or you are organising this from a club. Please let me know at i_chakrabarty@rediffmail.com or PM me.

Pin Parvati in sept. is good idea.
AndreasW is correct about having one rest day before you crossover-this is this crossover which is most important. Start your ascending to it as early as possible.

Crossing river should be bit careful and you should use rope and belay system if possible.
We croseed this in early hrs of morning-although with RED-HOT chilled thighs !!
