Looking for a 3-4 day trek in the north
Hello all
This summer (July probably), I'll be heading to India for 3 weeks with my younger brother. Two of those weeks will probably get taken up with seeing my family in Delhi and Bihar. I'm keeping one week free to do something with my brother. He's had a hard time at university recently and I'm looking to do something 'active' to boost his morale and give us a shared activity over which we could bond a little. Time is going to be limited - a week or at a push 8-9 days isn't a huge amount of time. With the rains and the heat on the plains, I was thinking about a short trek from a base somewhere in the Himalayas. The question is where...? I've been to spots like Manali, Srinagar (and then overnight at Gulmarj) together with Gangotri, Rishikesh etc but to be honest I don't want to revisit these spots (unless someone comes out with something inspirational). Money isn't tight. I'm willing to pay for flights to and from Delhi to save time. I was thinking about Leh but am not too sure if decent 3-4 day treks are available from there. Advice and personal experience would be appreciated. The primary purpose of this one week jaunt is to give my brother and myself an activity over which we can bond and perk him up a little. Cheers. |

Mr Rush - I am not an expert on this, but i did make it out to Leh about 4 years ago - some pics here (travelindiavirtually.blogspot .com).
There were a multitude of options for trekking available from Leh. So finding one that fits your requirements should not be a problem. You do need permits for going out of Leh (at least I did) and so budget 1 day to get those sorted out. From Leh, we took a jeep to tsomoriri lake (look on wikipedia) and camped out there. Leh was amazing and so was the lake. Definitely recommended. I do intend to go back one day and trek (they have some options to go trekking in tibet - but not sure how that is right now politically and you need about a week for those). |
