Kuari Pass trek this october

Hi there

Have finally decided to do the Kuari Pass trek instead of Hampta pass trek in HP.

A few questions.

Is the path easy to find or is a porter very nessecary.

Do you need a permit to do the trek - and where would u optain it?

How long does it take from HAridwar to Joshimath in a taxi? Is it completely unrealistic to get a few hours of walking done in the late afternoon if we leave HAridwar at 5AM.
And appr. how much does it cost to buy a seat in a shared taxi aompared to how much it is for hiring the whole taxi.

Is it easy to get at taxi for Haridwar in Ghat?

Best regards - Troltuu

If u search the site for all threads with "Valley of Flowers", "VOF" and "Kuari" u will get most of the transport info and other info u want. If u then have more questions, feel free to ask.

You do not need a permit.

It will take 8 to 9 hours to get from Haridwar to Joshimath. I presume u will start trekking from Auli after getting there by the rope-way or car/taxi. Allow one hour for that, let's say u get to Auli around 3 pm. I don't know - shud u be starting a trek that late? I'll leave that to the trekking experts. Suffice to say u can get a cheap room at GMVN Auli where u can freshen up, get a hot bath which u won't get easily the next 1-2 days, a good hot meal, latest weather info, and a good night's sleep before u start.

It may be poss to get a taxi from Ghat, but maybe they charge a higher per km rate. Best is to come to Nandprayag or Karnprayag, from where u will have many more options.

I will again write it here...

1. No permit required but yes, they charge FOREST ENTRY FEE and this is by scale which I could never understand. They will charge you when you will end up your trail at AULI. There two guys with walkie talkie sets will ask you to pay. I DID NOT as the guys was drunk and from the very face of him, he did not look like working in any FOREST OFFICE.

2. Yes- you not only need porters or ponies but a guide too. This is jungle trail...a slip may create lifetime memory !

3. You will travel to NANDPRAYAG and from NANDPRAYAG to GHAT and then again you will change jeep for RAVNI or SITEL.

4. Yes- I took HARIDWAR to GHAT taxi manytime. But the word they understand will be VIKAS NAGAR GHAT.

The distance between Haridwar and Joshimath is about 280 kms and in normal road condition, a taxi will take about 9 hours to reach Joshimath.

If taxi is not available at Ghat for Haridwar, you will surely get share Jeeps from Ghat to Nandaprayag from where you will get taxis to Haridwar. The distance between Ghat and Haridwar is about 235 kms.

From your questions, it appears that you plan to commence trek from Auli for Kuari Pass and end at Ghat. From the point of view of acclimatisation, I would suggest that, if possible, you start your trek from Ghat and end at Auli. You will get porters and guide from Ghat.

hello again

thanks for all your help in my preparing for crossing the Kuari Pass.

It was a super great trip. Had some porter troubles though. Our guide was useless and didn't even know the way. After crossing the Kuari pass he went towards Tapovan instead of Auli. Which was where the porters with mules were going with our stuff.

We had to go a few hours back up the mountain and met a another group that had crossed the pass. They said that our porters with mules had left our things on the other side of the pass (which was thress hours back up and an hour down) and had gone back the way they came from. Brig problem!! We had only one option and that was to hurryly cross back over the pass to get our things. But some in our group was not fit for this ekstra challange. Fortunately it turned out that our porters hadn't abandoned us, but one of their two mules had had a leg injury. They had left it behind and crossed the pass with the packs it carried on their bags. Very very good news and definately worth a considereble tip.

So in the end it turned out perfekt. We came down in time to get a taxi to joshimath and a weldeserved bath.

The trek was absolutely beautifull. And could even compare to the ones I've done in Nepal.

It is reccomendable to start in Ghat, but don't expect to be able to find a lot of provisions there. And hardly anyone who can speak english. We did find one who could and he helped us find a guide, and told him to find som horsemen on the way. We paid the guide 400Rp per day (500 incl. tip) and the horsemen 300 Rp per day (supposedly on a day to day basis, but the came with ud the whole way and we ended up paying them 500 rp per day.

I have put a few pictures on my website if anyone wants to see. The adresse ir www.troltuu.dk in the menu-bar pres "2007 asien, svalbard, sverige INDIEN" and then "Indien oktober 2007"

Best regards - Troltuu
