Kashmir this winter 2009 / 2010

Looking for whatever advice I can get on this. Which houseboat on the Dal (Golden Lake area); which hotel at Pahalgam and which in Gulmarg. Would Sonamarg be accessible in Dec last week / Jan first week? Drive to Sonamarg from Pahalgam or from Gulmarg?

Ashish, that is peak winter time and it's hard to predict which routes will be open.
On the Dal Lake, choose your houseboat and bargain hard!
At Pahalgam, Hotel Snow View or Heevan.
Best would be the JKTDC cottages or hotels at most of the venues.

You can drive to Sonamarg from Pahalgam or from Gulmarg.
The normal sequence by road from Jammu is that Pahalgam detour comes first; then the detour to Gulmarg; then is Srinagar and Sonamarg is farthest, on the road to Kargil.

Hi Anup,

Thanks for your reply. Actually, I have a choice of going to Sonamarg from either Pahalgam or Gulmarg. So which one should I choose.

At pahalgam, I am staying at Mountiview and at Gulamrg in Nedous. Both are good.

The shouseboat I have chosen is in the Golden Lake area of the Dal - goes by the name of Chicago Group of houseboats owned by Ajaz Khar.

JKTDC hotels tend to be incorrect in winters as they aren't equipped often the approach being snowed in.
