I havent been there but have collected some information form some people I met last year on the way to Haridwar - they were coming back from Kakbhusandi Tal (did not make it) and I was on my way back from rudranath and we met on a traffic jam due to a landslide

My understanding is:
  1. There are two routes - one from Bhuindar on the VoF route and another from Vishnu Prayag
  2. On both you will need to hire a tent and guide/ porter - dont think this can be done like a tea-house trek
  3. I believe the trekkers I met last year Sept tried from Bhyundar side but could not make it as they did not get a good guide and got lost also they tried in end of Sept when it rained heavily last year and they got struck as some streams that had to be crossed had swelled with water

I was trying to get some information on IM on this and it is in the following thread (I am not sure if this is the correct way of attaching a thread )

Nanda Devi National Park Trek

Thanks Spice for the information.

I know that this is unsual route, apart from VOF and HemKund Sahib. I have done Hemkund sahib a number of times. I have heard that a lake exists above Hemkund Sahib that feeds Hemkund Lake.

I am really excited to know whether Kagbhusandi Lake is that lake? It will worth to do this trek in August this year.

I am not sure whether there is connection between the two lakes - from what I have read it doesnt seem so as it has not been mentioned.

As for August it should be ok if you have a good guide - but you should needless to say watch for the weather which is more unpredictable these days. As mentioned in my mail, i was caught in very heavy rains between Sept 25-27 on my way to Rudranath

Kagbhushandi Lake trek route

I checked out the route on Google earth based on some Harish Kapadia writings and the Army map.

here is what it looks like

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?t=h&h....269165 &z=12

basically you start from the Bhuindar valley....turn east near Bhuinder village to enter the valley under the feet of Hathiparvat.

Keep to the true right of the river initially and cross over to the otherside near the base of Hathi Parvat to start approaching Kankul Khal (4800 Mtrs approx). Descend down to Kagbhushandi Taal.

Follow southeast along a ridge to reach Joshimath as indicated.

I had made an attempt in June 2004 from the Vishnu Prayag side, unfortunately I could not make it because of some misplanning on out part.
As has been pointed out ther are two routes to the Tal one from the Buinder side and the other from the Vishnu prayag side.
From the Bhuinder side go upto Bhuinder there you have to cross the Pushapati Ganga climb Kunkun Khal at an height of 15500 ft and go down to the Tal.
From the Bhuinder side the best guide I can think of is JAGJIT SING CHAUCHAN from Bhuinder village, if he can't go he may recommend someone.
I had gone from the Vishnu Prayag side on either way you require a forest permit (recently started) which can be obtained from Joshimath.
From Joshimath go up to Baldora Pool there a sign post is there stating "Kag Bhusand Darsaneah Sthal 23 KM Paidal" steep climb to Pang village a forest guard is there I had to baksheesh him to get past that point. From Pang to Vinayak top (in June through out water shortage) It was here we made the mistake or rather my guide did so. You cannot go to the Tal and come back the same day here but I assure you that there are camping grounds ahead of Vinayak Top, you have to climb a ridge and go down to the Tal It was getting very late hence we had to turn back and could make it to the tent at 10.45PM.
I had a young fellow by the name of AMAR SINGH from Badrinath with whom I had been to Satopanth Tal and Neelkant Pass. Sorry I do not have his address with me.
The good trek would be to go up one route and come down the other.
Kagbhusandi Tla does nor feed the Hemkund Lake they are far from each other.
Good Luck

Just turn on the "Terrain View" and you shall be clearly able to see where the various camping grounds are!! and join the placemarkers together and the route can be traced.
