Information about Rupin Pass

1. Saribasa: Snow and rain hindered our pace, so we had to camp here otherwise we had plan to push ahead and camp above the waterfall.

2. About three hours, snow and bad weather slowed us down. Excluding the break of one hour we had at the waterfall.

1. Could anyone give us the route to reach Naitwar from D'dun.

2. Approximately how long does it take (with stoppages) if we take a Sumo from D'dun to Naitwar?

3. Can we do D'dun to Dhaula in one day (break at Naitwar) with a combination of Sumo and local jeeps?

4. Anyone with contact numbers of any Sumo drivers/taxi's in Dehradun?

1&2. Dehradun-Mussoorie-Damta-Naogaon-Purola-Mori-Netwar (Aprox. 180 kms). It tooks us 8 hours to reach Purola by bus and further 4 hours to reach Netwar by share jeep/s from in Aug'94. Sumo should take less time. One can directly reach Netwar on Dehradun-Herbertpur-Kalsi-Chakrata-Deobend-Tuini (Approx. 200 kms) but it is better to check road conditions of Chakrata-Tuini section before taking the journey on this route.

3. This, I think, depends upon the road conditions in Purola-Netwar section (or Chakrata-Tuini section).

4. No idea.

1/2. You can thank Avid becos of whose instigation I have the numbers at my finger-tips:
a) Dehradun-Mussoorie-Aglar Pul-Kuwa-Naugaon-Purola-Mori-Naitwar - 176 km (very good, Sadaji ). Shortest route, minimum 5.5 hours just driving.
b) DD-west on NH72-Lambarpur(shortcut of 6 km from here, bypassing Herbertpur/Vikasnagar)-Ambadi-Yamuna/Aglar Pul-rest as above - 186 km. 10 km extra, will take same time as above due to shorter hill-section.
c) DD-Muss-Yamuna Pul-Chakrata-Tiuni-Hanol-Mori-Naitwar - 214 km. Very scenic, but slow going. Chakrata-Tiuni road condition will have to be carefully monitored prior departure. Minimum 7 hours driving.

Oh BTW, you're wasting your time taking the train to Dehradun.

3. Yes. But try and avoid the NDLS-DDN Shatabdi, NZM DDN A/c Special wud be much better.

Now you have got my attention. Why doesn't it make sense to take the train to D'dun?

Can somebody provide a complete route of this trek ( Day wise ) and the trk distance point wise.

I was initially thinking of doing hamta pass and chandertal in september,but this one looks intresting.

I was also encouraged by the fact that some first timers were able to do this trek.

Is there any possibility of seeing snow ?

Arjun, I'm replying in this thread so as to keep the info "under one roof".

As I mentioned somewhere, I'm not sure if Dhaula is in the park area. But even if it is, it's no problem to get a permit for the vehicle on extra payment - 50 bucks in 2005, so maybe it's gone up a bit. Just clear this with your driver before engaging him. I don't think he shud have a problem, the extra 11 km won't kill him, since he will charge you anyway for the distance and you're paying the entry fee. Cheers.

As Dilliwala educated me some days back, the Railway track makes a huge U turn around the Rajaji Nat'l Park from Saharanpur to Haridwar and Dehra Doon. Its a time consuming detour.

The road from Saharanpur Northward goes direct to Herbertpur and Northwards to your destination. Will save you three hours minimum. More if you hire a Sumo.

Arjun, the only caveat to the above being cost (and maybe time of arrival) - from Saharanpur the Sumo wud charge more, which may or may not be offset e.g. on the Shatabdi by the 100 bucks less per head to get off at Saharanpur. Plus time was critical in the Shatabdi case becos of 12.40 pm arrival - if you take one of the night trains though that problem ceases (not to mention that neither of them go to Saharanpur ). In that case it's probably cheaper all told to go to DDN.


Shall we start discussing Ambala already, Avidbhai? Naaah, I think I've confused the esteemed members enough.
(What a pity there's no railway line to Paonta Sahib!)

I get the gist. It does not make sense to make a detour via Haridwar and the Rajaji National park when you can hit D'dun directly via Saharanpur.

We are taking the night train to D'dun and in some ways as Dilliwala says, will offset the time saving. However, I notice the Mussoorie express takes an helluva long time to get to D'dun even being a night train. Sad luck.

Here is the day wise break up plan of ours. There could be an additional day taken for a small detour here and there, but this is the gist of the trek:

June 16 Travel to Netwar from Dehradun (8-9 hours)
June 17 Travel to Dhaula by jeep and trek to Seewa
June 18 Seewa to Jaakha
June 19 Trek to Upper Rupin valley. At foot of waterfall
June 20 Trek to top of Waterfall.
June 21 Acclimatization; local exploration.
June 22 Cross the pass. Camp site above Sangla Kanda
June 23 Trek to Sangla.
June 24 Return to Shimla via Narkanda

Finally, there are not only lots of possibility of seeing snow. We are worried whether there would be too much of it to make a safe crossing. Want to come along?
