Another way

While it is possible to start the Nag Tibba trek from Pantwari (not Pathwairi), getting there from Mussoorie (58 km) is a bit complicated. Another starting point, and easier to get to, is Thatyur (31 km). With luck, u can even catch a jeep from here to Devalsari, 8 km away on an unmetalled road. From Devalsari it's an 11 km walk to Nag Tibba. Watch out for the false peak!

Mussoorie to Thatyur:
Take a direct jeep. Alternatively, take any bus or jeep going down the Tehri Road and get off at Suwakholi (10 km east). The side-road to Thatyur starts here; take the first jeep going that way (21 km north).
Note: All eastbound buses/jeeps leave Mussoorie from the Community Hospital on Tehri Road.

There is an FRH at Devalsari, which can be booked through DFO, Mussoorie. Thatyur has some basic accommodation.

Hi Jyoti and Dilliwala,

Please help me out with an itinerary of Nag Tibba and it's top.

The way I have planned is-

Friday Night- overnight to Dehradun and Mussorie.
Saturday- Local jeeps to Devalsari and reach there max by 1PM.
Start the Nag Tibba trek and reach there before dark.
Overnight in sleeping bags in a local house which is
there at Nag Tibba or tents whichever suits.
Sunday- Start the climb for Nag Tibba top at 5am. Walk down to
Devalsari by 12 noon. Catch a jeep for Mussuorie and then
Dehradun. Overnight landing to Delhi.

Is it doable? Whats the altitude of Nag Tibba Top? The way I have planned, would it be possible to get local jeeps to maintain the time frame?

Eagerly waiting as execution awaits.

Thanks in advance,
Nilakkhya

Hmm, there are no houses at Nag Tibba or around!
And you're being rather optimistic with your schedule.

Ok, let me make it simple for you - read this guide, which is the most detailed you'll find on the net. It will clear many points.
Caution: It's written by Bill Aitken, so beware of raised expectations.

Nag Tibba's altitude is 3048 m.

Dilliwala,

The article has confused me a little bit but on the other hand has clarified some weak links.

I have also considered Harish Kapadia's write up on the same. It looks doable in 2 days but accommodation of Saturday night is a concern area. ( I don't wanna be kissed by a bear for sure)

Lets see what best could be worked out in this regard.

Thanks a ton for the info.

Hi,
I did this trek on a weekend in february.
Just to add i took the unusual route.

Friday morning started from dehradun-mussorie-suakholi-thatyur-''Village Sirs''(not devalsari) - we reached village sirs in evening pitched our tents at school playground.
we met a old guy from the village who was our guide to nagtibba.

Early morning 7AM we started for nagtibba not from the usual devalsari side but from the backside of the top i think it was east side.
It was steep climb into the jungles(no paved path, just directions by the guide) and we reached there easily by 1 PM(considering we had some slow first time trekkers). we reached the frozen taals(lakes) there onwards the top was hardly 300m away we did that and

started our way back down from the PAVED PATH down the Village Sirs(and not from the path we choose earlier)
and by 6 PM we reached the village..since there was no local jeep's to go back mussoorie

we STAYED that night in that village and booked the first jeep goin to mussoorie/dehradun next morning.
sunday noon we were in dehradun..

The guy to be contacted in village sirs is -
Mr. Sushil Thapliyal - 0953604 4061. he will arrange all the guide, taxi or any other requirement to you.
there are plenty of drivers who have their taxi's live their.

I believe this itinerary is short and gives you a good opportunity to live in the villages of garhwal himalayas and decreases the distance for climbing nagtibba!

Feel free to ask any other queries.

Also to add that,The village MANGALORI(mentioned in the guide by Bill Aitken) is a just a kms ahead of village Sirs...
Village Mangalori is the last village and is at the foothills of Nagtibba.
Road goes only till village Sirs.
and also refer the first way as written by Bill Aitken.

Back in 1963 I did Devalsari-Nagtibba and back in one day. But I was in a group of young males. As we didn't have any intention of camping for the nicht we didn't carry anything heavy with us.

Hi,

Any idea on Srikot. I have heard its a 5-6 hours walk till Nag Tibba base camp from here. and Mussorie to Srikot is drive of roughly 3 hours.

Please suggest.

Thanks

Yeah I guess that would work too. Shrikot is 7 km up the road from Pantwari. You can get a jeep from Mussoorie (Library) to Pantwari, where you will have to wait for a local jeep. Mussoorie-Shrikot is 65 km, so approx 2.5 hours in all.

I don't know why the walk should take 5-6 hours though, the distance has to be less than 8 km.

Hey Dilliwala,

I guess the route to Pantwari and further upto Srikot is different from Devalsari, Thatyur. Am I right?

If this is the case, which one is more scenic? We would be driving through.

Thanks,

Nilakkhya

They are equally (un)scenic.
Ok, the Thatyur one has some pine trees along the way. The Pantwari one will give you a glimpse of the Yamuna, as it should be (a river, not a sewer).

Thanks...I guess I'am going to take the Srikot route as the trek would be shorter from that side. Lets see.

Another question was if I get up through Srikot side and down by Thatyur side and we would be parking the vehicle at Srikot, would it be possible to get a local transportation from Thatyur to Srikot? How much time it will take and the number of kilometers?

Thanks
