how to dispose cigarette butts?
Hi, Whats the best way to dispose cigarette butts. Its not biodegradable. So far I have just been throwing it around except in some places like glaciers.
My first question is. Can we burn them?. Would that solve the problem?. I am prepared inhale some plastic fumes. And any interesting ashtray-solutions to take with while trekking?. I often dump them in an empty cigarette packet and promptly take it back to our cities and dump them (in bins). A handy ashtray that can hold 20 butts would be ideal. At the end of the day, can we put them in the camp fire? I can do anything for the environment except abstain from sex and smoking .What do you think? |

Learn to roll your own, don't use a filter - if you want to stop tobacco entering your mouth when inhaling then roll up a bit of card and stick it in the end of your cig - you can call it a 'roach' if you like!
Your litter will then be bio-degradable. You may think smoking unfiltered is worse for you but I can assure you that rolling tobacco has fewer nasty additives than you find in manufactured cigarettes. And with all the money you'll save, you can make some substantial donations to cancer research charities, yay! |

I've been rolling my own for years,
and think that's a good answer to the dilemma.
I worked for several years as whitewater river guide. The boss would always tell our clients just to "give the butts to your guide, they'll put 'em in their pocket" . . . in lieu of that, maybe get hold of a plastic bag, or bottle that you could put them in , AND keep the smell out out of your clothes . . . those river shorts I have still reek ![]()

I think abstinence, but...
ISTR, thinking back to the 'bad old days' that that empty packet does make quite a good portable ashtray. If it were me, and I was still a smoker, I'd forget the filter things and take rolling tobacco and papers --- thus leaving nothing that wasn't biodegradable. But I vastly preferred rollups anyway and continued to smoke them until my chest could stand them no longer. It then had to put up with a couple more years of punishment from filter tips, despite giving obvious signs that this was not the best thing I could do to stay alive. Yes... I was stubborn about giving up, too! ![]()

Thanks everyone. Looks like I will have to move to cigars or beedis.
Moo, I am not concerned about filterless ones. If I enjoy it, I will move to them. I am actually thinking of something like - a chemical which would dissolve the butt, may be can dissolve 100 buts for an ounce or so. That would be cool. If I come across anything, I will post it here. Thanks. lucyl, nice guys may finish last . Still, thank you very much. |

Carry them on you in a matchbox, and then dispose of them in a bin when you get near one.

But hey! If you do it in private, then it's none of my business. But who could pass up such a good chance for a rant ? ![]() |

Just remember to put the butts out, , preferably by getting them a bit wet, before you stock them in the bag... |

WOW!!
I never know this was a serious topic Places which have smoking banned. I don't smoke there. Other places, I never really cared.... Smoke and throw.. I just ensure that I don't start a forest fire. This thread is now inspiring me to think more about my actions. THANK YOU!!! |

I am pleased to see you are thinking about what you are doing - unlike a nameless lady two years ago who nonchalently flipped her cigarette butt onto the canvas awning shading my door and providing me with privacy from the street. Mr K and myself were inside at the time with the door closed and totally ignorant to the conflagration outside our room! Fortunately a passerby yelled and screamed and buckets of sand were dumped on the flames while we remained inside. I took a peek and knew a draft would certainly draw the fire into our room so rapidly shut the doors relying on our rescuers!
Doesn't tobacco kill bad bugs in gardens? Maybe there is a use for your butts there?

I also hadn't really had the idea that a cigarette is non
bio-degradable. Since that is the case, I would be using an empty cigarette box to dispose of the butt........

There was a time when people used to soak their cigarette ends and spray the resulting liquid as a 'natural' pesticide.
I think someone eventually found out that it was more poisonous than many of the commercially available chemicals ![]() |
