Himalaya views
Dear All,
This probably not the type of request one would normally make on this thread, but your help would be greatly appreciated. I have never seen a mountain before and this is something I want to do before I leave India. I was hoping you could suggest a one stop destination where I can have my fix. However, there are many limitations. Firstly, my parents will be joining us and they are too old to do any trekking, etc. Second, I have an infant son as well so we are extremely limited in terms of mobility. Further, I'd imagine that we will be spending a lot of time in the hotel hanging out with our kid so basically I'm looking for the following: 1. Easy rail/air access from Delhi 2. A balance between "luxury" hotel and breathtaking views where we don't have to trek to see the views. From the posts it seems Ranikhet could fit the bill, but it seems quite far from the mountains. Leh is another option, but I'm concerned about how the altitude could affect my son and my parents. Lastly, I'm planning on going in mid-October. Thanks so much, Sarvesh. |

Can I suggest Darjeeling instead of North India? Just peer out of your hotel room window and see the mountains (world's third highest - Kanchenjungha). http://images.google.co.in/images?hl...anchen jungha
Nb.: Ranikhet or Darjeeling height will not cause any trouble to your parents or child. However, any place is Ladakh may. |

Shimla just north of Delhi a few hours by railroad. It is a nice town with plenty of very good hotels, excellent resturants, etc. It is situated on top of ridge with nice views of the Great Himalayan Range.

Mt. Kanchenjunga
It looks like we've settled on Darjeeling for this trip. Thanks so much for all of your help.
I've seen awesome shots of Mt. Kanchenjunga from Yuksom, Dzongri, Samiti Lake, etc. As I'm stuck to travelling by Innova, is there a good place to get closer to the mountain from Darjeeling within 2 or 3 hours drive or will using a zoom lens from Tiger Hill achieve the same result. Thanks again, Sarvesh. |

I hope you are not travelling from Delhi to Darjeeling by Innova? Not really required. Delhi-Bagdogra flight would be convenient.

No, we're flying to IXB and then will have a car to Darjeeling. Any place worthwhile in Sikhim within 2-3 hours drive of Darjeeling that gives that much better views of the mountain?

See http://www.indiamike.com/photopost//...hp?photo=20057. If you have time enough, you may think of Sikkim. If it is just two or three days, enjoy in Darjeeling. You said you would be accompanied by your child and parents, and will not be very mobile. Another map: http://www.lirung.com/map/map_others/Sikkim_Map.html

No - it takes that long to get to the border checkpoint - save it for another time.
