Hi folks,
I am planning to do the YHAI Dalhousie trek and am registered for the 5th Jan 2010. I am considering starting on the 1st from Bombay so that i get a few days before the trek to do some sightseeing. My return ticket is booked for the 13th so post trek i would still have about 2 days to do some more excursion. I need advise as to the best places to visit considering i need to report at Dalhousie on the 5th. I also intend to cover Baijnath temple, can anyone tell me the best way to reach there from Chakkibank. Is Nainadevi temple also somewhere close? Can i include it in my plan? Post trek i basically intend to visit Dharamsala, Mcleodgunj.. This is my first trek in the Himachal. I have heard the weather could be very cold. Can you guys pls advise me as to how i can best plan the trip.. including but not limited to the clothing, footwear, climate, hotels, places to visit, mode of transport between places, things to do, et al.. Cheers... Lalit |

one sec, one sec....
Baijnath is in Bageshwar...that's in Kumaon, about 30-odd minutes from Kausani. Nainadevi temple is in Nainital. That's again in Kumaon. You're going to Dalhousie....that's in Chamba valley! Noooo way!!!! There are some temples in old Chamba town. That's near Dalhousie. Maybe you should try seeing those. EDIT: If you really want to go to these places you mentioned, you'd have to retrace your journey back to Delhi, and then catch a cab to Kumaon (with or without the train to Kathgodam option). |

Surely possible, You have two days free before Dalhousie trek and two days after the trek. You will need to come down to Baijnath and then Mandi, and from there to Swarghat and then to Naina Devi. That is if you go by main roads and by bus. Naina Devi is south of Bhakra-Nangal Dam. You can go to Dharmsala or McLeodganj, but then you will need to abandon Naina Devi. Take your pick. You have not told us where will you alight from train and where would you take your return train. In case it is Pathankot, then there will be a problem returning to Pathankot. Check in Google or some other maps.

Thanxx Aupmanyav.. what i gather from ur response is that both temples are on different routes.. well my reservation from Bombay is till Jammu,. and the return is from Chakkibank. I guess i would need to skip Nainadevi as it falls off the route. In such a case i feel i can do even Baijnath in the two days post trek, since i would anyways be in Mcleodgunj, which i feel is pretty close to Palampur... Whatsay???
Also can u shed some light on the climate aspect. How low could the temperature really get?? and what do i need to carry... Cheers... LAlit |

If you intend to do Baijanth, you may do Chamunda Devi Temple too. It's right on the Dharamshala - Palampur road. An ancient tantric temple, situated in a cremation ground, a very charged setting...

Delhiwala, I think Prince Ell should not add places, as he has to come back to Chakki Bank/Pathankot to get his return train (he seems to be new to this area). Why have you booked yourself up to Jammu if you are going to Dalhousie? If you have some thing to do in Jammu, then it is OK otherwise you should get down at Pathankot. If you had three days in the beginning or end, you could have done more places, but you have two days before and after your trek. If the train reservations can be changed, then it may be possible. The other rail-head for Himachal Pradesh is Kalka.

You are right, the reason i booked myself upto Jammu was with intention of visiting Vaishnodevi but then i have dropped that plan for now.. and yes i havent visited Himachal before.. and am quite excited about the trip..
what do you suggest.. will it make sense to start on the 1st Jan.. i.e. alight at Chakkibank on the 2nd afternoon visit palamput and then come back to Dalhousie and post trek again spend some time in Mcleodgunj and then return to Bombay... else take the 2nd option of starting from Bombay on the 4th (i have booked tickets for 2 days)go straight to Dalhousie and visit Palampur post trek while i am in Dharamsala??? |

You would be travelling twice on a slightly different route in the same area. But yes, it can be done, though I would perhaps not do it. Where would the trek take you? If Chamba is not already there on the trek, you could include Chamba before the trek and Dharamsala/Baijnath post trek.

No need to get confused. Since you are going to Oberi, Chamba is not a choice. Just chill in Dalhousie, go to Dainkund (Stopping by Himachal on Snowy Evenings - Dainkund, Dalhousie etc., http://www.trekearth.com/viewphotos.php?l=3&p=602718). Go to Dharamsala/Palanpur/wherever you like, post trek.
