Hiking

We--my 15 year old son and I--are looking to get up into the mountains for some day hiking, perhaps one overnight. We are as of now planning to travel to Shimla, and then to Sarahan.

Several years ago, I took my other son to Mussoorie. Any thoughts on which hill station provides a better fairly quick jumping off point for good hikes in Himalayan hills? (We are spending five, six days on the plains, and then heading to mountains for about a week, and of course bus travel is slow in the mountains).

Also, if I could, I'm trying to get a sense of what sort of temperatures to expect in places like Sarahan or Sangla in mid April?

Best

Michael

I would suggest u go to Mcleodganj, which is situated abt 9 kms up from Dharamshala in Himachal..from ther u can trek upto the snowline of the Dhauladhar range above Triund in a couple of days..
Mcleodganj to Triund would be 4-5 hours walk..abt 10-12 kms..the last 2 kms a little steep climb..

I have put in details of lots of trek in the region.

Some good ones (for day hikes) that I can suggest are:

Khalia top (2 days) --- wonderful views, from Api in Nepal to Nanda Devi in central Uttarakhand
Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila (1/2 day) --- really beautiful and one of the easiest treks
Deoriya Tal (1/2 day - can be combined with Chopta)
Trekking around Narayan Ashram in eastern Kumaon (near the Nepal border) ---- the whole area is trekker's paradise
Bedni Bugyal (2 days) ---- but absolutely awesome. Stunning panoramas, both with and without clouds
Chaukori and Jageshwar - Wonderful road trip
