Hi Everyone,

I am planning a trek during the month of March, 2013. Some what between 9th March to 25th March.

Lot of suggestions were provided in the forum for the trek during this time of the year. However I was looking for long duration trek. So chosed Goechala Trek.

Now I need some help regarding this trek. I would be obliged if somebody could help me with the same.

1. Is this the right trek during this time of the year?
2. As this trek is of 8-10 days. What other activites can one plan after the trek is over? (I have 15-20 days holiday)
3. The most important thing.. Details of the people who can help me in planning this trek!

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Rajiv Berlia

Hi berliarajiv,

Welcome to IM.

We also planned the trek in the last week of March. But we have been warned about the snow from Dzongri onwards.
There might be chances of not making to Goecha la due to snow.
So we have rescheduled the plan to last week of April.

Happy Trekking.

Hi Life1style1,

Thanks.. you noticed it was my first post.

I have break only between 9th March to 25th March. After that I need to join office..
I have plans for roopkund in June.. However I want to utilize the break with some trekking!
Thanks for the update but as you see I am time bounded and I want to go for 8-10 days trek. Can you suggest an alternative.

Also request you to share the details of the people who can help me with Goechala Trek in case I have to move ahead with this plan!

Thanks again!

berliarajiv,

If you need any alternative trekking ideas then i would say go for Sandakphu-Phalut if not already completed the trek.

You can search with Goecha La in the search box and will get lots of thread.

The rates are taken from the Kanchendzonga National Park forest office brochure in Yuksom.
Anyone who is venturing inside the park for the purpose of Photography, scientific research, Trekking, studying wildlife etc has to pay these fees and noting down his name and address at the park forest office.

A. ENTRY FEE

1. Indian Nationals
a) Rs.200 per head for the first 7 days.
b) Rs.30 per head per day for additional days.

2. Foreigners
a) Rs.400 per head for the first 7 days.
b) Rs.75 per head per day for additional days.

3. Students
a) Rs.40 per head for the first 7 days.
b) Rs.20 per head per day for additional days.

4. Local Guides and Porters with the team
Rs.20 per head per day.

5. Pack Animals
Rs.10 per animal per day

6. Tent Pitching Charge
Rs.40 per tent per day

B. CAMERA OPERATING FEE

a) Still Camera Rs.20
b) Video Camera Rs.750
c) Movie Camera Rs.3000

C. FILM MAKING FEE

Indians / Foreigners
1. Feature Film (one film at a time) Rs.30000 / Rs.60000
2. Documentary Film (one film at a time) Rs.20000 / Rs.30000

Other than the above rates the hiring charges for guides, porters and animals are as follows
For Guides the rate varies from Rs.500 to Rs.800 per day

(The guide can also be a cook if you can convince him and fix a rate)

Porters Rs.200 per day
Yak / Mules/ Horses Rs.200 per day

Whenever I go for a trek to Goechala I hire this guide and he is a superb cook too (Tenhung Subba : 08145890180/ ) miss his masala tibetian bread.

The manager of Demazong Hotel (0395241215) in Yuksom. (Rob : 09775473687) he will arrange everything for you. If you take Tenhung do inform him early.

Car Hire from NJP / Siliguri to Yuksom ( Rs.2500 to Rs.2800)

MANOJ: 09734946581

Photocopy of identity proof is needed and have to be submitted at Yuksom Police Station before commencing for a trek or any other activity.

yes these are very recent rates. I have been to Goechala 6 times since 2002...actually had to shell out Rs.1300 extra (in nov 2011 the rates were pretty nice) this time in the forest office in yuksom. Went last week of november 2012....This time we completed in 6 days ....Yuksom- Sachen-Bakhim-Dzongri-Thansing (started for Goechala viewpoint 1, 2 and 3 via Lamuney at 1:30am)- Thansing ( back to Thansing from Goechala at 5pm)-Yuksom

We were a group of six ....so we required 25 litres of kerosene. get kerosene from yuksom and never consult the guide or porter's as to where you will buy things from or else they will go to the shop with you to have a certain percentage.

In all Kolkata - Kolkata total cost was Rs. 5400 per head (including everything)

Thanks Hawkwind!

I am going with the guide BB Subba. Got his name from earlier post. Will post my experience when I am done with the trek.
He is charging 1000 per head per day for all the things. I dont have to arrange anything. Porters, cook + food, yak, utensils, tents will be arranged by him. I am not sure about the entry fees. Will ask him next time I call him. Is there anything else I need to arrange that I have missed!

We also inquired and found rates to be similar to 1000/head/day. the rates mentioned above are drastically cheaper. Is it possible to arrange everything (food raw materials, porters, yaks, guide, tent etc ) in one afternoon from yuksom ?
We are reaching yuksom on 23nd march and we have 9 days for the trek.

Doe the cook rate cover the food raw material also like oil vegetables etc ? or do we buy those separately ?
