Gaumukh to Rishikesh & Ganges

Can anyone please tell me is it possible to travel from Gaumukh to Rishikesh and what is required in the way of guides, food, equipment.
Also does anyone know if it is possible to travel the entire length of the Ganges by boat.
I am doing quite alot of research for my forthcoming trip to India & a trip to the mountains is a definate.

Regards

Not possible by river route, rafting is impossible due to most difficult rapids. Of course if you are an expert you can try rafting or kayaking (combining with walking down in difficult patches), but say ‘I love you’ to all your near and dear ones before starting.

jituyadav,

Thanks for the reply.
I would want to do the trip from Gaumukh down to a safer more navigable part of the river by foot. Inflatable kayaks are what I had in mind for the rest of the trip and then maybe ferry's for the rest.
There was a book written by Eric Newby "Slowly Down the Ganges"
he did the trip by rowing himself and also hiring boats along the way.

Paleface,

I will need to take advice on this, when is the best time to visit these areas ?
I have to visit Punjab first and I don't fancy that in the height of summer. So I suppose the best time will be early autumn or spring. If you think otherwise then please advise.
By the way did you ever e mail me ? I am sure you said you were from Hounslow, I used to live there as well.
No matter where you go in the world there will always be someone from Hounslow. I even met someone from Hounslow at a wedding in Canada !!

Wasn't born there but went to a corrective institution thereabouts!! Also spent some time living as a kid at the front end of 28Right at Heathrow... Not very exotic that part but was mixing with Indian and Asian kids from early on so it rubbed off i guess. Can't recall the email, anyway...

Bhagirathi (Gangotri) is the main feed of Ganga in the Garhwal / Tehri Garhwal part of Uttarakhand. Floating down Bhagirathi in Monsoon is obviously suicide, i.e. July to October when the river is in full spate or simply too high, too fast, too wild. From Gangotri for 60/80 kms would be a very difficult challenge indeed. When it clears of silt and lowers during the rest of the year one is faced with a boulder strewn river that you could paddle for short stretches i suppose, but would also have to be getting out of so often for the dangerous bits and dams. Still having seen those docco's where paddlers do unbelievably risky things, there must a few who would take it on.

It's a long way to Tehri dam/lake, where it's still a 100kms to Rishikesh, downhill....

Paleface,

Thanks for the input. I suppose the logical thing to do is to trek from Gaumukh down to a point where the waters are calmer.
Obviously avoiding July to October.
How long would it take to do this in days, what is the milage and terrain like ?
Are there guides who could be available at short notice?
I accept that I will not be able to make the journey from source to sea all in one go, this may take a few years.

I have most of my own expedition gear, but would need a guide for the mountain stage.

Regards

Honestly i feel you would be better off just walking down to Rishikesh - but on the opposite side to the main road, with minor detours for interesting diversions of terrain and mind. That would be a good experience and i would join you, 100% probably for some of that journey. You wouldn't need a guide really, not following the river. Let's say 10 days, alright 2 weeks for Gaumukh to Rishikesh inc. Dawdling and diversions. Haridwar - stay at my Guru's for a night or so and cast off from his jetty.....
