Gangotri - Nandanvan Trek Report - June 2012
Hi All,
I recently completed a gangotri - Nandanvan trek and thought will share the trip experience. I was trekking till nandanvan along with a Bhagirathi 2 expedition team.
May 31: - Bangalore Delhi flight - Rishikesh overnight bus
June 1: Rishikesh to Uttarkashi in sumo. The road is good initially but after chamba it is bad and painfully long. We took about 5 hours to reach UK. Visited NIM in the evening.
June 2: Picked up equipments for the expedition team at NIM. weather was like bangalore weather at UK.
June 3: Took a cab to Gangaotri. The road was surprisingly good. and we reached in about 3.5 hrs. There were a few landslide zones but oveall a plesant drive.
June 4: Gangotri to Bhojwasa trek. I was having severe nausea and a bit of disorientation after chirbasa. But was fine after reaching Bhojwasa.
June 5: Bhojwasa - Nandanvan. Again fine till gomukh. But nausea started. We trekked straight to nandanvan and not tapoban. The route was precarious. Bharals decided to start a rock fall at one junction and we had to scurry for safety. The last climb was tough and I was out of breath after every 30 steps. We reached nandanvan around 4 pm. It was very cold and windy. The stream was in full flow.
June 6: Woke up to a heavy snowfall and complete whiteout. It snowed the entire day. Cleared up in the evening and and provided some nice photo oppotuities.
June 7: The night temps dropped pretty low on 6th. The stream froze mostly in the morning and the rocks had a layer of glassy ice on top. The expedition team pushed on to upper nandanvan and I moved to tabovan with a couple of porters who cameby. Crossing the glacier was straight forward this time. Met three ppl from calcutta at tapoban who shared their tent space and rations with me. Heavy snowfall at tapovan in the afternoon and we were gain holed up inside the tent the whole day.
June 8: Tapovan to Chirbasa: Long walk to chirbasa. Crossing the glacier was again interesting but not so scary as the first time to nandanvan. We could have walked to ganogtri itself if we wanted. But chirbasa is so beautiful by the river side. Nice oasis.
June 9th: Chirbasa - Gangotri - UK.
June 10th: UK - Haridwar. I had a flight ro delhi from Dehradun. Should have stayed at Rishikesh. But went to haridwar with the calcutta friends. It turned out to be the best decision in hindsight. The markets were very nice and the lassi was out of the world. The lassi alone is wortht he whole trip to haridwar. You will never get such good ones in bangalore.
June 11th - Dehra dun - Delhi - Bangalore.
Over all a very good trip. I feel now that I should have have pushed on till vasuki tal. But I'm glad that I made sme new friends and got to spend time haridhwar.
