please help. I want to trek in those area during first week of October. Can anyone tell me the weather condition of those areas during that time of the year? My daughter will be with me. She is 10 yrs old. She had the experience of Sandakphu trekking and neora valley treking. But I'm not sure about the boulder zone on this trek route. Any information regarding will be helpful.

yes, there is a good amount of boulder zone after gaumukh..

I had seen a foreigner who had come for mountaineering heading back to gangotri with help help of porters as he fractured his leg while negitiating ans slipping over one of thoese boulders..

I was lucky enough to getaway without any kind of injury after a slippage.

In 1st week of Oct, NandanVan can be ruled out.. I know a few guys who went till Tapovan in October after lots of difficulty.. be prepared for a lot of snow..

Go with ur own provisions and tents.. Dont expect babas to be there.. there may leave anytime in sept end or the 1st week of Oct depending on the snow conditions..

In June rain can be expected and a bit of crowd too all over Uttaranchal.
September is by far the best time to do this. jyotipg is right about the boulders, be very carefull. If you are carrying a backpack make sure it is long & thin with heavy items towards the top, this will raise your centre of gravity & result in better balance. I have seen people straining their ankles very bad here.

Yeah mid september is the best time although it'll be very cold.

No babas at Nandanvan i guess. There are some at Tapovan. Take your own food and dont depend on Babas. I got THE worst food of my life there.

Nandanvan i think will be more difficult comapred to Tapovan as you have to cross more of the glacier terrain. I dont think it'll be a problem for kids in terms of strength. They generally have a high energy levels compared to adults. Just have to be disciplined and careful in the boulder area. Especially while descending

I think AvidTrekker has experience of taking kids on Treks here. Get his advice.

Have you considered Kumaon. Plenty of places to visit in October.

June is definitely a better time.. Snow would have been melted by then...
Rain start sometime at the end of June or early July.

Only problem is that you will find a lot of piligrimage crowd pouring in at Gangotri.. a lot of them even go till gaumukh..

Finding a proper accomodation on bhojwasa would be difficult. there is a GMVN bunglow.. and road side dhabas which provide acco.. One can even stay Lal Baba Ashram as Bhojwas..

The trick is to start early from Gangotri before the other piligrims reach there. This is help you get a decent acco at bhojwasa.. Follow the same rule for Tapovan also..

No Babas are there in NandanVan. So I assume that u r going with ur own tents and some food to use in Nandanvan.. For other places on the route, you dont need to carry any food.

You can consider Dzongri too. October is the best time for it. If you need a tougher one you can continue to GoechaLa from there.

Just wait, Avid might post soon.

Hi Dooms, I'm just going thru some posts. Found Babuchand completed this trek in last october. found you too on the same route last october. as this year puja is by end september, I'm considering this route. could you share your experience.

Jyoti, as we don't like crowds, we are not sure about june trek to gaumukh. still could consider it if the sarroundings are as astonishing as sept-oct. suggest.

Whole of this part of Uttaranchal gets very crowded with pilgrims in June. The roads get clogged with vehicles, shortage of decent accomodation, unhyginic conditions along the road makes life miserable. I would take doom's suggestion.

Lightbulb Hi,

But my personal experience suggests to avoid Dzongri / Goecha la with a 10 yr old kid. Babu and Avid can provide you first hand info, Sukanya. You can send a PM to them.

Hi Sukanya,
OK my experience goes like this.

Tapovan is the only trek i have done in this area. And i am not a expert trekker like most guys here. Accordingly you can attach importance to my comments.

First week of october was fine last year. Generally its a strict no-no from second week-october for this area. Till about a week back before my trek the news was kind of bad from the area. One guy had even died a week back before i went. My guide there had kept some other trek as a back up plan.

Fortunately climate held up. Infact it was excellent. Babuchand too was there a few days later. But that doesnt mean its going to be the same this year too. Things can change pretty dramatically in mountain regions. Mid september to first few days of october should be OK. earlier the better.

Babuchand measured -10 C temperature when he went. So be prepared for extreme cold conditions. Good high altitute sleeping bags is must (something like Feather). During the day it can be quite hot (Apply lots of sunscreen lotion).

Go through the entire thread suggested by Somnath. Let us know if you have any more questions.
