Malari-Munsiyari High Altitude trek

Hi. Am planning a good trek in Uttaranchal. How about the 'Malarie - Munsiyari High Altitude trek'?

How much preparations do I need (actually we'll be 4 persons) for this trek? And our schedule is in June first week. So, needed to know if it is feasible during that time.

Thanks

Malari to Milam - Trans Kumaon Trek - Sep2008

Guys..am planning a Trans Kumaon Trek from Milam to Malari via Untadhurra Pass and Khingar Pass. High points re in the region of 5600 mtrs. Probably a 12/14 day trek. Meant for very serious trekkers willing to take the endurance and altitude challenge.

Would love to see any othe members interested so that this becomes a reality.

In fact the route being planned is

Milam Glacier- Dunga- Parital- Untadhurra Pass- Topidhunga- Khingar Pass- Lamthal- Malari.

I took the cue from one of the KMVN publications.

Looks like an interesting route...along the northern flanks of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.

Great idea..This is one ambition / dream I have in mind. This is one of the wildest , toughest and less frequented treks in the Himalayas as I know
Also one trek where I heard that one can get to see the fossil remains of the ancient Tethis sea.Do post the timings you have in mind so that I can give it a thought.

way to go guys. this is one of the best treks you can undertake. i had gone till milam in 2005 and was really drenched. and from milam, the real trek begins. met some ITBP guys who had come after completing their patrol on the same border stretch and they were saying that milam is like heaven for them after this trek. if you want the contact details of the guides, then i can give that to you. my guide had mentioned to me about this trek, but this requires some real preparation. be sure that you are used to walkign long distances, over a period of many days. also, after martoli, the landscape will change to be more barren and ladakhish or tibetish.

well, you need to get extra permission from munsyari itself if you want to proceed further. they will give you some form with the permission and then you can go ahead. you would have to show this form to the itbp guys in milam.

Google Earth Rec

Here is the link to some recce pics on Google Earth

I have reconciled the site and placemarkers with US Army-1956 Contour Map to the extent possible....

Have tried to take a elevation view of both passes...both seem less formidable than the razor edge of Balipass ...but the route is challenging nevethless

Was just reading up the description of the entire route (the other way round from Malari to Milam) by Harish Kohli in his book "Across the frozen Himalayas" ...shall post some excerpts very soon...truly astounding descriptions of the route!!!

Unta Dhura Pass

I have been wanting to do this trek for a long time now.

What puts me off is the ILP required from two district SDM's. One from the Pithoragrh side for Milam to Unta Dhura and one from Joshimath side for Unta Dhura to Malari.

Otherwise its a nice trek in absolute wilderness. Army pack mules laden with supplies cross the Unta Dhura in season... so its not technical at all. Its just very remote.

Happy trekking !!!
