First time trekker seeks advice!

Hello all,

I stumbled across this forum just in time! My friend and I are planning on visiting India from June 20th until July 26th for a total of about 5 weeks. We are very interested in doing some trekking in northern India for some great panoramic views. We are both 21 years old and pretty athletic/fit so difficult treks are not out of the question. However, we will be first time trekkers with no previous experience so please keep that in mind. The treks I've read about these last couple of weeks mostly last for ten days or more. We want to trek for a minimum of two days and a maximum of five. I am thinking that treks up near Leh will be well suited for our needs and wants.

Can anyone suggest specific treks that fit this criteria? Or even provide links that will give me the information I need? Keep in mind that we are up for a challenge, but not too much of a challenge, heh.

Thanks so much for the help and I hope to be a contributing member of these forums after my trip

Forum....

If you have the time, please go thru the Trekking forum on IM. Its a good resource. If you are trekking out of Leh, please acclimatize for three days by staying at Leh itself (& not doing strenuous activity in those three days)

Since you are fit, i don't see you facing any difficulty.

All the best and Happy trekking !!!

I have browsed through the trekking forum a good amount. I just haven't seen a good short trek with spectacular views discussed so far, so I thought I'd ask about one We will be acclimatizing ourselves once we get to Leh, that's for sure!

short treks

2 days trek in Ladakh?
You might walk around Leh a bit (to Phyang and back for instance). Also you can speed up Likir to Temisgam trek but you have to add a drive to Likir and return to Leh - 2 more days.
Why there are no short treks in Ladakh?
Because majority of the treks cross 5000+ passes. You can not acclimatize for 5000m in Leh itself therefore it will take 2 days minimum on the trek to safely cross the pass.
Few short treks up to 5 days I know about: Likir - Temisgam - Khaltse; Stok - Spitok; Wanla to Alchi (or Chiling).
Panoramic views? Dont worry, they will be all around you.

We have pretty much finalized our itinerary for all of India, so we will be doing our trekking in Ladakh

I just recently bought Charlie Loram's guide to trekking in Ladakh and the Lamayuru to Alchi via the Tar La trek looks like it might fit the bill for my friend and I. Can anyone share their experience or any knowledge about this specific trek? Will it be too hard for us to do for our first time? Is it a relatively easy trek to organize? My friend and I will want to go with an actual agency on an organized trip. What do you think of this idea vs. hiring a pony-man/guide and doing it on our own with him?

You can try Gangotri-Gaumukh-Tapovan trek in uttaranchal. It's not too hard and scenery is just excellent.

I'm looking forward to Ladakh in June/July myself, and it will be firsts all around the board for me too, can't wait!

I've been looking at the treks from/to Lamayaru myself... they are so popular and attractive.

Good luck!

Lamayuru Alchi is a nice choice.

Likir to Temisgam is the shortest and easiest trek available in Ladakh

The trek you have mentioned is more strenous but is of 5 days.

Organised v/s hiring a pony-man/guide
That will depend upon the price you are ready to shell out.
For 2 person you should get it organised for
$50 per person per day from a reputed trek agency to
$30 per person per day from a new trek agency

If you want to be on budget, hiring a pony man will be good idea. he will show you the way and might as well help cook for you (Guide/Pony man/helper all in one).
You can get hold of a pony man by just requesting the hotel manager for one.
