I'm traveling solo to Ladakh in July. How hard is it to find an independent group in Leh for trekking (across zanskar and markah valley)? Should I look for partners before going or I can just find some when I get there?

Thanks in advance!

You can post here in IndiaMike, and a forum called BCMTouring.

In-case, you don't find any, there is still hope after you land in Ladakh: it's relatively easier to find trekking groups (mostly foreigners) in Leh Market as compared to other parts of Indian Himalaya. Just walk around and look for posters/ notes in hiking equipment hire shops and even some of the cafes.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat money.

can you be a bit more specific when you say zanskar. If you are referring to the classic Zanskar route (aka Darcha PAdum & Padum Lamayuru) you will find a good number of western trekkers (and very few, if any indian trekkers) on this trail (or what remains of it after the road construction). However, you may find few folks who are trekking independently and the independent trekking groups seldom advertise for partners : Most often the ones who look for partners (as rightly pointed out by Aman in post #3) are the ones who are looking to share the costs or organized treks. If you are referring to other zanskar routes please specify as trekkers on some routes are non-existent. I have trekked for days in zanskar without seeing another trekker

On the Markha trail you will find a lot of trekkers (mostly foreigners) and a few Indians.

However, both of these routes can be trekked solo and you can get more info about the solo trek from my blog

cheers
sathya
